Any thoughts on Crystal lite or Propel Zero?

I thought I was doing myself good by drinking this stuff instead of pop. I was at the gym today and there was a discussion about anything with artificial sweeteners in is is as bad as drinking pop.
Has anyone here seen that weight is coming off slower while drinking these or anything else that has artificial sweeteners?
Thank you all

Go for it. Anyone claiming that it will have the same effect on weight loss is flat out wrong if you hold all other variables identical. That being said, I'm not about to get into any debate about the health effects of artificial sweeteners.
From a body composition standpoint, the beverages you listed have fewer calories than regular soda and as such (again, all other factors remaining the same) you will lose weight FASTER by replacing regular sodas with the above.0 -
I drink soda (regular and diet), ocean spray drink mixes, energy drinks, coffee, tea, fruit juice, vegetable juice, propel, gatorade, etc. They have all sorts of sugars ranging from sucrose to fructose, erythritol, xylitol, etc. I don't drink them daily but I have at least one each week. Usually 2-3.
I am happy with my weight loss and overall health.0 -
Thanks Sidesteal,
I know based on calories both of the products I've mentioned have to be better than drinking pop. I spent some time googling before I posted this questions and I found a thread here in myfitnesspal, from back in 2009 debating artificial sweeteners. So I guess that subject pops up on these message board from time to time.
Thanks again for the quick response.0 -

I guess it depends on you. I gave up all that stuff, sodas, propel anything with artificial sweeteners because I realized I was drinking most of my calories. I even gave up fruit juices becasue of the crazy amounts of sugar. I never liked artificial sweeteners to begin with. Something about the taste and the fact that it is well...artificial.
That being said if you can fit it into your diet and still loose weight then fine. Most people either cut back or cut it out to have a cleaner diet.0 -
Diet soda isn't bad for weight loss unless you happen to be one of those people that get cravings from drinking it. It actually helped my lose weight because it is my sweets so I don't need any when I drink it. When I don't drink it... then I get crazy cravings. I drink 3 cans of diet soda or even up to 2 liters a day. If you get the cravings other things with artificial sweeteners may have the same effect, and that would be what hurts your loss.
They may not really be good for your health, but I was able to lose 100 lbs in less than a year so... not bad for weight loss.0 -
Thanks McKayMachina,
Your weight loss banner speaks for itself. It doesn't look like drinking anything you've mentioned has effected you weight loss negatively at all.

I think you need to examine the effects of artificial sweeteners on your body. There have been studies that say they are safe, studies that say they make your body crave sugar, and studies that say it messes with your pancreatic functions (glucose/glucogen levels) etc.
I couldn't figure out why I had a nagging sweet tooth when I was drinking the flavored zero calorie waters. When I heard they could make you crave sweets, I took a look at my diet with and without artificial sweeteners and sadly, it was true for me. Some people have no problems. I would love to be able to drink a diet soda, or put a crystal light in my water bottle, but it's counter-productive for me. If I want sugar, I eat (or drink) the real thing. Unfortunately, my protein powder has splenda in it, but I tell myself it's just a trace, as it's the final ingredient listed. I hope I can trick my mind into tricking my body into not realizing it's getting any artificial sweetener!0 -
I don't really give in to the fear or artificial sweeteners. I rock Propel pretty hard. No calories, no carbs, tastes great. I usually just drink water but if I feel like spoiling myself I will get Propel Kiwi-Strawberry once in a while.0

Or you could be like me and all these chemicals, additives and junk make you sick to the point you are about to head to the hospital because the reaction is a horrible nightmare....
I have to eat extremely clean if I want to keep my body 'sane' - and can DEFINITELY taste anything artificially added....0
