Gym Membership for College Students?

Hi everyone!!! I need some help and advice regarding gym memberships. I am currently a full time student and I live on campus. I have access to free fitness classes and a gym on my college campus so I currently don't have a gym membership. However I was hoping to join a gym mainly for my various school breaks (Thanksgiving, winter, spring, summer, etc.)

Does anyone have any recommendations? I would like to join a gym that has a variety of classes. Also, since I am a poor college student, cost is definitely a big factor in my decision. What is a good price for gym membership? What are some other things that I should look for in my gym?

Just another quick question: what exactly is freezing a gym membership? It's like suspending your membership for a period of time, right? Sorry if these questions are stupid, I'm a complete newbie to the whole 'finding a gym' process.

Doesn't your school have a work out facility with cardio equipment, weights ect? Mine does. My old uni had an amazing one.

Some gyms in your town might be as cheap as 10 dollars a month. I have one still active back home since I go visit a couple weekends a month and for over long breaks.
  • Yes, my school has a work out facility. That's one of the reasons I don't have an outside gym membership. However, I would like to continue my workouts when I go home for my school breaks. I've looked at some gyms around my area and the cheapest in my area is around 20 dollars a month. Is that a good deal??

20 is okay. I would talk to the gym though and ask them if there is an annual fee and if you can cancel any time. Also ask them if you can freeze it for a couple of months or cancel and start back up with no fees. Just explain that you are a student and would like to have some questions answered. Mine I just canceled and restarted it. I never asked about freezing it, should have.

some places let you pay by visit so ask if you can do that if you cant freeze your membership. Also look into doing workouts at home to save some $$. find an indoor track to run for free, or a DVD and cheap weights to do a little toning at home. This would be good for short breaks, for summer brake a gym membership might be good. see if there is a planet fitness in your area 10 dollars.

20 bucks a month without a contract is fine if you will only use occasionally... otherwise like cheeksv suggested, get a good exercise DVD (you can get a lot of good ones for 10 bucks and under) or try the c25k (couch to 5 K) regime and save cash...
