Hi,

On cleaning out my kitchen i discovered my boyfriend had quite a bit of whey powder sitting at the back of the cupboard. It has a use by of Nov 2010. Smells fine to me though.
Do they really go out of date - should i use it or chuck it?

Also - should i even be thinking about using whey powder to help me loose weight? Do you need to do a lot of exercise for it to be worthwhile?

Most foods have an expiration date at which, at the very least, the product starts to break down. I can't imagine that eating it at this point will kill you but it may have lost a good amount of its nutritional value.

You can use whey powder to simply help up your protein intake by adding it into other foods or making a shake. Most people just don't get enough protein and I think MFP's protein goal is pretty low. You don't need to exercise at all for it to be beneficial but I also wouldn't use it in large amounts if you aren't lifting and trying to build muscle.

Yes, it does go out of date, and depending on the brand it might smell grand, but it will taste REALLY rancid. I made that mistake when my brother in law gave me a bottle he wasn't using anymore. I took one swig and almost died. BLECH. You can try it, but for heavens sake DONT take a huge gulp right out of the box!

It does go bad, I had a similar situation, it smelled fine and did not taste bad, but I got sick from it. Be safe and chuck it...
