Weight Fluctuation?

Hi All,

First time poster, so be gentle. :O)

I have a question purely about weighing oneself. I weigh myself daily. I know I shouldn't, but I like to see it coming off (or staying the same) on a daily basis as it motivates me.

When I started using myfitnesspal, I was 118kgs and in 3 months was down to 96kg. I felt amazing. One thing led to another and I stopped for a bit and during the following 9 months I put back on 6.5kgs.

I restarted last week and on Saturday weighed myself and was bang on 100kgs. On Sunday, I had 300 under my target and also ran 1.5km in about 6mins 50secs. I weigh myself this morning and I am back up to 100.3kgs. I know its only 0.3kg but that is 3/4 of a lb.

All I want to know is why would this be?

Thanks in advance and good luck going forwards.

Your weight will fluctuate day to day and during the day - usually related to fluid in your system somewhere, food in your stomach/intestine/bowel, muscles holding water after you exercise, monthly hormonal changes... you name it there are a million reasons.
I used to weigh myself daily and got annoyed with it. Now I weight less often but always at least once a week. I only record once a week though.
I found a really useful exercise once I had been here a few months was to chart my weight lose on the same day each month - and that was great because it smoothed out all the bumps and showed a bigger picture pattern of my weight.

Hydration levels, time of day, whether or not you've been to the washroom etc can all influence your weight. You can weigh yourself every day but don't be discouraged by daily fluctuations. You should only be concerned if you're continuing to gain weight over a significant period of time (e.g. 1-2 weeks). That's why some people prefer to only weigh themselves every 1-2 weeks because they're less likely to see a higher number on the scale.
  • Thanks for the explanation. That is a great idea! I think what I will do is weigh myself on the same day every week and then try and expand it to a month.
  • Cheers Jesung. Yes, I tried to make sure its in the morning before I have a shower and after I've been to the loo. I guess I will have to leave it for a weekly cycle.
