I used several online calculators that typically asked for my sex, age, weight and activity level. Those yielded an average of about 1450. So for months and months I controlled my diet, tracking everything online--and lost absolutely nothing! So frustrating!

Finally, I went to a local physician (an internist, nephrologist, hypertension specialist) with a specialty in bariatrics who tested me using a "BodyGem" device (you breathe into it while staying very still for several minutes--apparently it or a similar device is used on "Biggest Loser"). Imagine my surprise when he told me my resting metabolism rate was 1150! Even my controlled diet had been too much to lose weight.

I am now following the doctor's prescribed and closely supervised low calorie, low carb diet with immense success! First month's loss was about 10 lbs. From here on out, my expected loss is predicted to be about 1.25 lbs a week.

So in my experience, it pays to get an expert evaluation of metabolism rate, whether by a doctor, nutritionist, or even a gym that does such testing. If I had done so over a year ago when my excess weight began causing problems with an arthritic hip, I could have avoided months of pain from the hip and emotional distress from the weight loss failure (never a problem before menopause).

Online calculators are probably sufficient for many people, especially younger and fitter. But for some of us they will yield an unrealistically high estimate. It is likely that a combination of reduced activity due to arthritis along with a medication I take that is known for slowing metabolism made me one of those people who needed the more precise evaluation to avoid an over-estimate.

    Good luck on your journey!
