A friend of mine started using the Body Fortress whey protein powder mix. She gave me some to try and it's actually not too bad...but I was wondering if this is a decent brand [she said its like $15 at Sam's Club] since it's pretty cheap. I'm just a little worried that it may make me GAIN weight instead of lose it? I don't mind using it as a meal supplement...but not if it's gonna make me gain weight!!

I don't use it personally but my husband swears by it. Just make sure U don't go over your protein for the day! He says it makes him feel full after a good workout. He has lost 40 pounds since joining on here! The reason I don't use it is I enjoy eating nuts that is my protein after a workout. I like the crunch :)

My experience has been the cheaper the protein mix, the cheaper the product. You may want to consider investing in better quality protein sources as your body is worth it. Plus the cheaper brands just make you gassy....sorry to say.

Message me and I can share with you some of the better products I have used.

Nothing will make you gain unless you are eating a calorie surplus. Protein shakes are just easy ways to get the protein you need. I try to get at least 130 grams (1 gram for every pound of lean body mass). I can't do it without protein shakes. I don't use them as a meal substitute. They don't have enough calories or nutrients for that. I use them as snacks and make sure I have one after lifting.

If the calories it adds are within your calorie goals, why would it make you gain weight? Eating more protein can help with losing weight (for reasons like increased satiety and maintaining muscle mass), but it still has to stay within a reasonable calorie goal. What nutrient macros are aiming for? For example, I aim for 30% protein to help maintain my muscle, and it equals about 1 gram of protein for every pound of lean muscle I have.

Body Fortress is a good brand and its whey isolate protein which is the best kind for absorption by your body. As far as making you gain weight, you just have follow your calorie recommendation. As long as you don't make the shakes/drinks calorie laden (by adding peanut butter or something like that) and you stay in your daily calories, you should be fine.

Personally, for taste, I prefer the Syntha-6 (chocolate peanut butter) and the EAS Vanilla Protein shakes. I add frozen fruit and berries to the Vanilla.
  • I have some and I like it. I also have Jillian Michaels whey protein powder. I like them both. The Body Fortress has more calories. I would actually use the Body Fortress as a meal replacement and that is what I have done in the past. I use the Jillian Michaels stuff for after a workout.

And I always go over my protein for the day and I have lost weight.

I use the body fortress protein powder from wal-mart. It is actually a pretty good mix. Great reviews on several fitness sites. You don't always have to fork out the money for the better stuff.

Absolutely, protein is known to boost your metabolism. Not to mention the body fortress protein has branch chain amino acids that help your muscles recover after a good workout and help eliminate those sore muscles.

Looks like you got your questions answered but I'll throw one more thing in here, I personally would be very skeptical of someone that bad mouths a particular brand without any specific information as to why and then won't share publicly on the forum what their recommendations are for good brands.
