A question for the girls regarding Mirena

Hello Ladies,

Are there any of you that are currently using Mirena and having a hard time keeping the weight off? I got Mirena in November 2010 and since then have gained 15 pounds and CANNOT get it off. If I keep gaining at this rate i will have put on close to 20 pounds in one year. That just sounds CRAZY to me, considering that I have never had this type of problem before. Due to this and some other side effects I am seriously considering getting rid of Mirena.

I got Mirena in August 2010 and didn't notice any major gain/loss.

I've not had any weight gain from it, but everyone will react differently. Bear in mind when considering whether it is the cause of your weight gain that only a very low dose of the hormone goes into your body and acts systemically.

    YES!!!

I didn't gain back right away, but it got more difficult to lose and then it started coming back on after about a year, even though I was still exercising and watching calories. Now it's not coming off AT ALL. I put on 4 pounds last week for no reason!

I'm actually seeing my doctor in a couple weeks because of the problem and I was planning to bring up the Mirena. My gyno inists it shouldn't have an affect, but it clearly has. I don't know what I'm going to do about it.

It was actually after I got Mirena that I lost about 20 lbs and kept it off for several years. I gained it back eventually because of other health issues and medications (ironically, most of it AFTER I got Mirena out, but I don't think it was related to that).
  • Anything with hormone is causes me to put weight on, it was partly my fault too but I do think the weight goes on faster that it should. I opted for the just the normal copper coil this time and the weight is finally coming off.x

I have had mine since May of 2007 and will have it replaced this coming spring. The Mirena doesn't affect my weight; what I put in my mouth does.

My daughter seems to be having weight issues with it, as well as others. She, too, is having it removed as soon as possible--evidently, not just everyone is willing to do the removal, so having to find an OB/GYN willing. But between fighting to keep weight off and other issues, she's convinced it's time.

Well, when you're down to putting 1,000 calories of very healthy food in your mouth and STILL GAINING, it's clearly not what you're putting in your mouth.

Like someone above said, BC affects different people different ways. I never had this problem with the pill.

1000 calories a day is not enough and that may be why you are not losing weight....

I'm down to 1,000 because I was gaining when I was eating more and continued dropping it in an effort to lose.

No matter what your metabolism, unless there's something wrong, NO ONE doesn't lose weight on 1,000 calories and certainly doesn't gain it. It's not possible. If eating too little caused weight gain, anorexics would be fat.

For the record, I lost 34 pounds easy-peasy before I got my IUD. I've been struggling ever since.
  • I got mine in June 2011, I've been steadily losing weight since May 2011, I haven't noticed any difference personally, but I have ready that weight gain can be an issue for some. Maybe talk to your doctor?

I had the Mirena (5 year) inserted March 2010, and have lost almost 40lbs. I have been working my butt off by changing my diet and exercising regularly though. I used to be on Depo and felt it very hard to lose weight. Every woman's body is different. Good Luck.

I've had mine since September 2010 and I haven't had any negative effects in any regard with mine. I love it.

Again, like with almost everything, different people = different reactions.

    Good luck.

I didn't gain weight but I couldnt lose weight either, I also had other problems with my period and I would have cramps 3 weeks out of the month it was aweful for me....I had the old IUD and it was fabulous should have stayed with that one! I finally had it taken out because I wanted to try and have my 4th and last child...she is now 10 months old and I will NOT get another mirena!!

I'm honestly not sure...I've never tried to lose weight until after my last child, and I had the Mirena put in right after her. It takes dedication for me to lose, but who knows if it's because of BC or because of really crappy eating habits.

But really, even if it meant it took a little more time for the weight to drop, I'd still stick with the Mirena. This whole not having a period thing is AWESOME.

Maybe ask your doctor? Might be you are just one of those unfortunate gals that can't handle any sort of hormonal BC without gaining. If so, you have my sympathy :(

I wasn't trying to be sh*^y with my response. I was simply stating that FOR ME, the issue is what I am putting in MY mouth and not the BC.
