Protein Mania

What's the deal with the huge kick on protein shakes, bars, etc? I read things from people who are on the treadmill for 1/2 hour and then "oh my goodness I need some protein". I think some people are confusing themselves with athletes. Unless you are an athlete or deficient, I don't understand the reasoning. I think that these bars and shakes could actually be increasing peoples daily calorie / sugar count. I actually do a medium-high protein and high fibre diet. However, I exercise 1.5 hours per day and am at goal weight. I am at low end of BMI already and was actually pretty deficient in the protein category. I had to increase it to get healthier. I am just asking the question because this doesn't make much sense to me when I think about it.

I think the only time you should have a shake is if you are extreme high intake. I am trying to take in 270 grams a day so I do take a shake before bed but most of the common knowledge out there is awful0

Protein is good for you regardless. No, bars and shakes are not the BEST way to get it, but for some people it's the only way they get it.... there are worst things.0 -
I agree with you. I see people adding unnecessary calories all the time. Unless you are strenuously exercising for hours or at a heart rate that gets you quickly to point of exhaustion, or have a deficiency in your diet, no reason to add shakes/bars etc. Protein is easily found in "real" food and most people don't understand that overdoing it just leads to excretion of extra protein through your kidneys rather than useful absorbtion. Lots of incorrect knowledge out there.0

#1- Protein increases metablism because is requires more engergy to process in your digestive system than Fat and Carbs do. You can increase your Thermic Effect of Food by nearly 25% by increasing protein intake. This can be as much as 200 calories per day of increased burn. That can add up to an extra pound or two per month.
#2- It helps build muscle or maintain the muscle that you have. One of the risks of dieting is becoming "skinny fat" by losing muscle mass. With proper lifting and nutrition you can become fit and look good as well.
#3- Protein is more filling and can help with hunger issues.
Protein shakes are not required, you could just eat more meat and get the same or better results. However, protein shakes are nice for when you are on the go or otherwise finding it hard to get that extra 25g to meet your goal for the day.
Ideally you wouldn't drink more than one scoop's worth of protein shake a day, get as much as you can from real food.0 -

I actually totally agree0 -
Because there's no stove top or oven in my little office where I can cook my chicken and fish, as I am also opposed to eating microwaved leftovers, or blending my natural sources of protein in a bottle to carry with me as a pureed slurry of flesh, I choose to include supplementation.0

The only way for me to lose weight is to have more then 100g of protein. It help after strenght training. It is quite inexpensive, it take care of my chocolat cravings.0

Best protein ever will ALWAYS be the real deal but if you are stuck and got nothing else to eat, go for it! It's way better than scarfing any crapola you can find (junk food). Now that being said, yes, lots of bars and protein shakes are LOADED with sugar and **** but that's up to YOU to be the smart one and do your research! There are good ones out there that are pretty close to the real deal. Mine has only 3 carbs per servings and no sugar at all. Anyway... I get what you say, ppl need to do their homework0
