Depends what you are doing on the treadmill.

...and it depends on your level of intensity.

Running on the street sideways in some kind of suspended animation must burn more than both combined.

For me I find I burn more calories on the elliptical. I can not run hard enough on a treadmill to burn a huge amount.

Running on an incline on a treadmill with burn burn burn. You can also do interval training (switching from fast to slow in regular timed cycles).

Incline 15%, walk/jog WITHOUT holding on to the hand rails. Not many people can do this.

    Depends on your heart rate.

Use a HRM or this: http://www.braydenwm.com/calburn.htm

My husband use the elliptcal and burns more on that. I can't seem to get a good rhytm so I use the treadmill. I just started doing the weightloss program on the treadmill and it took my incline up to 10 and then gradually decreased. That program added an extra 70-80 calories for same time. I normally do 140-150 for 40 min on treadmill.

At first, I preferred my experience on the elliptical once I tried it. If you have one that adds resistance/incline... you can burn a lot.

However if you add resistance/incline to the treadmill, you can as well. I would try 30 mins of both to see which one you like better when you put out your maximal effort.

This for me as well. Tho in the end it all depends on your intensity. You get out of it what you put in.

I find running with an slight incline on a treadmill burns the most, but a light jog on a flat incline I burn less than the elliptical.

Essentially the best machine for calories burned is the one you can do at a higher intensity for longer. This may be different for everyone. That being said, running is a natural moment of the body and will improve athleticism whereas the elliptical is an unnatural movement and will not, other than better endurance, improve athletic performance.

so if you want to be fit and improve athleticism go with the treadmill, if you just want to lose weight either machine is great.

Depends on how hard your working on either equipment. The treadmill has more impact with body weight vs elliptical

As fast as you can. Everybody is different.
  • Most people tend to lose more on the elliptical...

Just from what I see at the gym even if they go the right incline and speed on the treadmill, after one go at it they won't go back to it! Not saying you won't of course, just what I see.... its a shame :(

    for me always the elliptca.

but some of that is i am afraid to incline the treadmill or go fast, I have this big phobia of treadmills and fallign off them.

had a totaly anxiety attack at my stress test when she inclined it then told me to drop my one arm

If you set the treadmill on incline..you ill burn alot fast and have legs of steal. My son is great at follovving all the vvorkouts and trainers. Just 20 min on incline does more than running and not as hard on the knees. Gotta say the Elliptical vvorks out upper and lovver body.
  • What should I do on the treadmill to burn the most calories.
Use H.I.I.T. to burn off the calories. Example would be 60 seconds @ 6-7MPH followed by 60 seconds at 3-4MPH. You need to make sure you stay in the target heart rate zone during the faster portion of the exercise.

You will burn as much (possibly more) than an elliptical use H.I.I.T. Last night I hit around 460 calories for 30 minutes of work on the treadmill. No incline. A friend of mine uses the elliptical (bad knees) and burns the same or less for a given time.

I usually walk like 3.5 to 4 mph on that incline. Sometimes 3. My HRM shoes my HR at like 165 ish

This works really well for me also. I usually do 60 seconds at 6.0 and 90 seconds of 3.0 alternating for 40-60 minutes. Helluva burn.
  • Any incline between 12 and 15, and any speed between 3.5 and 4.5 is great. The higher the incline and speed, the more calories you are going to burn. No need to run, just walk. Running is bad for your knees.

When I do inclines on the treadmill, especially 8 or above, I get as good of a burn as I do running! I usually go about 3.5mph. I'll tell you though, a few months ago, I could only go about 3.0. Start at the pace and incline that work for you - as long as you're getting your heart rate up for an extended period of time, that's what really matters. Then push yourself when you're ready for more of a challenge.

The elliptical is great if you keep up a good pace. What I do is watch the calories per minute on the machine (yes, I realize the calorie counts on the machines aren't usually right, this is just a gauge) and make sure I stay at 10 or above. Programs with intervals or climbs are good too.

I like the treadmill vs. the elliptical, because even on a slow day..at least I'm able to go at my own pace..walk, run, jog...warm-up/cool down...

The ARC machines are pretty awesome! I prefer them over the elliptical
  • Not to stray off topic...
Running is bad for your knees.
Running in bad shoes with bad form is bad for your knees. Kind of like lifting weights with bad form is bad for your joints. Neither exercise is bad for you in & of itself.

Elliptical tends to burn more for me, at least I think so, because it takes me about 20 minutes on the treadmill before the sweat starts really dripping, and on the elliptical, it's literally around 5 minutes before it happens, lol.

yeah how fast & how much of an incline on the treadmill will make a difference... but I think I know what you're asking!

You burn more calories on the elliptical before "feeling it" then you will on the treadmill. the treadmill wears me out really fast.. elliptical I can go really hard for like 30 minutes at least :)
