Exercise and M.S.

I have recently been diagnosed with M.S. I have balance problems so walking is done with a cane these days. I have an exercise bike that I use daily for 60 minutes. I also have a band to use to strengthen my arms and chest. I was so shocked when i got my DX of M.S. I have been working so hard to get in shape. I have lost 40 pounds, but now I feel even though I am a bit short of my goal I need to just maintain for now. I take a ton of meds so I have to eat several times a day, but am eating fruit for that. So far i am doing well with maintaining, but I sure would like to be able to do some other types of exercise... maybe yoga? Any suggestions?

My dad has MS and does almost exactly the same exercises you do (exercise bike and tension bands)

I've been trying to get him to try yoga for awhile and haven't had any luck - I do think it would be great for you if done well. The great thing about yoga is everything can be scaled down to your level and it's about listening your own body. Side note - it's been shown that people eat 27% fewer calories when regularly practicing yoga.

If you have access to a pool it's great for MS - but just be prepared for it to knock you out. My dad is really tired after pool days.

My mother does yoga and pool exercises - although her MS has now advanced to the point of her being in a wheelchair, she was able to do these exercises for over 10 years before it advanced to this state.

My mom also has MS and used to do these same exercises. I think it's incredibly important that you just continue to be as active as you possibly can. *hugs* to you!
