monitoring heart rate

What does everyone else on here do to monitor their heart rate through their workouts? I have one on my treadmill but it SUCKS!!!!!!!! One minute Ill be 196 which I think is impossible and Ill check again a few mintues later and Ill be 88. Anyone have any suggestions for what I can do to correctly monitor my heart rate??

  • I believe the most accurate way to measure your heart rate is to get a heart rate monitor with a chest strap. Polar is the brand that most people recommend (I have a Polar F6 and it's really nice). They are a little costly, though. Type in "polar heart rate monitor" on Amazon.com and check them out, they are a little cheaper on there than in stores.
  • yes you can get a heart rate monitor that you can wear like a watch or there are some that come with a chest strap. The one that my husband I use we got at walmart for about $60.00 and it comes with the watch and chest strap. It will give you the cals. that you burn, your avg. heart rate, above or below it. and if you are in your zone and it has alot more on it also. My husband found out that he is burning abour 2500 cals. every time he goes to the gym and myself I will usually burn any where from 900-1500.

    I am in the same boat and have been considering buying a heart rate monitor. I think its our best bet. There have been several posts about them. Let me know if you hear anything good!:happy:

    You can monitor your heart rate the old fashioned way, which is use the timer on your machine and your fingers against your neck to count what you're at. It could give you something to focus on while you're walking. :)

    And like Julie said your other option is a heart rate monitor but to get an accurate one you have to shell out quite a bit of money.

    I have a Polar F6 as well, and I also love mine. I find that I want to go work out just for the chance to play with my HRM! You can find some good deals on them, especially now - I paid just over $100 on BestBuy.com, but my boyfriend got his for much cheaper on eBay. I think he paid around $50-$60. There are typically more men's-style Polars on eBay than women's, and they tend to go for less, but I think it doesn't matter which style you buy - it'll ask you for weight, age and gender regardless, so if you're concerned about the money part, you might want to check eBay out.

    Typically though, the ones without a chest strap won't do continuous monitoring, or give you an accurate calorie count. At least the ones I looked at wouldn't. So I would recommend getting one with a chest strap - you won't even notice it after a while. Good luck! :flowerforyou:

    wow that seems awfully high for a workout at the gym considering most people burn 100 calories per 1 mile of jogging...

    I was thinking the same thing... are you sure you're using it properly? I think you may be reading that in Kilojoules which is the metric version of Calories. I dont even eat 2500 calories in one day and to think someone is burning that much in one workout?? I dunno...
