Does anyone have a well decent method to get a idea of how many calories are burned from a session of strength training?

Yes, buy a heart rate monitor with a chest strap and then track it under cardio.
    Anything else is a guess...
  • Thank you, thats what I was just thinking of getting but getting stuff like that where I am currently living is a pain in the *kitten* lol. Thank you for the advice though.

This is a tricky thing as most of the burn from strength training comes from the 48 hours after a workout while the muscles repair themselves.

For cals burned during depends on your weight, the amount you are lifting, your gender, age, strength, # of reps, # of sets, rest between sets, etc. It is way too variable to get an accurate estimate. Even a HRM is not accurate during strength training as the physiological response (increased HR) is different than steady state cardio (which HRMs are intended for)

If you do use a HRM you would most likely over estimate the burn during strength training, but it may be better than other options and would be a little more accurate if you paused between sets, although then you will probably under estimate the burn.

i have noticed in MFP cardio database there is a "strength training" listed. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but it's better than nothing. In essence you will list your strength training under cardio. go look for it and see what you think. :) Good luck.
