Hello, the fiance had mentioned that he would really like to start lifting weights and wants to get a set for the basement. Money is extremely tight since we are getting married in June but I would LOVE to buy him a set for Christmas. I have no idea whats good, maybe a bench and some weights? He is very tall 6'5 and 315 he has lost some weight and would like to loose more. Suggestions would be wonderful. I looked at walmart.com and they have a 100lb set for $100.

 Thanks!

Have you tried Craigslist? You might be able to find a more complete set for a better price.

Craigslist is going to be your friend. You probably don't want to pay more than $1 per lb of weights. for sure though, spend the money on a good bar and get some horse matting for the floor for when you drop the weights.

    You will want:
    barbell (men's standard is a 45 lb)
weights (starting at 2.5lbs to 45 lb plates, if you can get rubber even better)
clips or braces to keep the weights on the bar
Squat rack (you can get one off amazon)

    good luck!

A bench and weights is a great starting point :) Shop around though, especially if money is tight. You may well find it cheaper elsewhere and since it's for xmas I'm assuming there's so immediate hurry.

Yeah I was going to suggest craigslist or check out the local thrift stores or a play it again sports like place. With his size I have a feeling a 100lb weight set isn't going to be enough weight for him. I'm 6'2, 306ish and doing 3 sets at 225, 230, 235 at the gym on the bench. The best part about weights are they are inc. hard to damage so buying them used is not going to mean you are getting a worn out product. If you do end up not finding something you could buy him that weight set and then every couple weeks or so buy some more weight, it's not too bad. LIke every couple weeks buy 20 pounds of weight or etc. Just make sure you get it in split amounts!

buying used you should get it at around .50 to .75 a pound in weight unless you are buying olympic standard.
buying new you will pay around 1.00 to 1.25 a pound in weight usually.

I'd start off with a bench, and if you get a bench with multiple positions even better.
