My husband, like most men who don't struggle with their weight, prefers any kind of food that's unhealthy and is automatically turned off when I mention anything "healthy". I'm the one who cooks in my household and I find myself all too often settling with what he wants for dinner because I can't stand making two seperate meals... feels like a waste of my time. I have 3 kids, all of which are totally impressionable right now. I'd like to get them used to healthier food now because I don't want them to turn out like I have later on in their lives.
So, how can I make healthier meals without the flavor giving it away? Anyone have any diet-friendly recipies that don't taste diet-friendly? Keep in mind, my husband isn't a meat guy. Only eats ground beef, which he isn't even liking that much lately. Unfortunately, he isn't a vegetable guy either and it's becoming very difficult to find things to make for dinner.

I have 2 boys, 13 and 19.
I got into the habit of making simple meat and potatoes (or rice) things with sides of fresh veggies (for me). Grilled or baked chicken, Tri tip, BBQ hamburgers (turkey for me), pork chops etc. Stayed away from pasta dishes, except spaghetti, i eat it over spinach and they eat it over pasta.
Hope that helps...0 -

Great idea on the spaghetti over spinach! Gonna try that. Spaghetti night always screws me up! Thanks!0 -
If he doesn't eat meat and he doesn't eat vegetables.... what does he eat?0

I'm kinda with her. What does he eat? My husband prefers "bad" food too, but he is definitely impressionable if I make a hearty meaty meal (he LOVES anything that involves steak).0 -
Does he eat beans? Meat loaf? Tacos? Sandwiches? Soup? Fish?
Sorry trying to think of things I make at home that my hubby and daughter eat.
Lastly...what would he say if you just told him to make his own dinner? Not trying to be *****y, but if you'll eat it, and the kids will eat it...then he should suck it up and eat it, or get up off his butt and make his own food. Just saying....0 -

Corn dogs, french fries, potatoes, anything with cheese, tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches, cereal, pizza, tacos (taco salads sometimes too), sweet potato fries, burritos, pasta, eggs, bacon, waffles, pancakes, nachos, hot dogs, etc. Pretty much anything processed or fried. He eats, but as you can see, I can't eat with him and stay under calories most nights.
He does eat fish as well, but I hate fish, so it's hard for me to cook it.0 -

I'd do that, but he wouldn't eat and he'd be a jerk to me later and it would become my fault for him being hungry. I'd just prefer to avoid the conflict... tried it before and the outcome was exhausting.0 -
I am a man and I do most of the cooking. Not that my wife doesn't cook, its just that I enjoy it so much. Luckily, my wife will eat anything I make. So I'm always trying new things.
Here are a few of my favorites
Eggs
Egg Salad: Use one whole egg for every three eggs used for the salad. Use light mayo, a drop of Dijon mustard. You can serve it on a roll for him and you can eat yours on a bed of fresh spinach or lettuce.
Scrambled Eggs: You can use egg beaters with the combination of regular eggs.
For a side try turkey breakfast sausage. Believe me you won't tell the difference and neither will he.
For a quick snack, have a few hard boiled eggs in the fridge.
If you want to try something delicious and easy try Chicken Mole. I make this all the time.
Cooked chicken breast. I've done this a ton of different ways. You can boil/steam the chicken or saute it or buy a rotisserie chicken and pull the meat off the chicken.
Pour a small jar of salsa in a pot. Add 1 tbs of chili powder and 1/2 tbs of coco powder. Heat up and add the chicken.
Depending how you prepare the chicken, you can make this in 20-30 minutes. Also, you can make it hotter or milder based on the salsa you choose.
Salads: I know it's hard to get excited about salad but there are a ton of ways to jazz them up. My favorite is with fresh spinach. Super healthy and you can eat a ton of it.
Try adding the following to your salad:
Feta cheese
bacon bits
dried cranberries
diced hard boiled egg
flex seeds (will give a nutty flavor and no one is going to know what it is)
You can use the small spray bottles of dressing. It will give it a little more flavor without adding a ton of calories.
Chili: Every man loves chili. Use lean beef and mix in some ground turkey. Load up on the kidney beans!
Best of Luck!0 -
