Toning without taking the house down with me?

Hey MFP family,

I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good workout video for toning that doesn't involve jumping, stomping, or traveling around the house. I live in an small old home and even normal walking makes the house shake and my frames wobble on the walls. I usually do Taebo, and I tried the 30DS, but both are too jumpy and make it feel like the house is about to fall appart. I also don't have a lot of space in my living room, so the videos that have you dancing all over the place are hard too... I end up backing into and tripping over furniture. So does anyone know of a video that keeps you generally in the same place, but is still fun, tones great, and uses hand weights??

Thanks Guys!

  • I would like to know too!! I live in an older apt building on the 2 floor. Even just walking around make it creak. lol

P90-the beachbody workouts. Can do them in a really small space and was able to do relatively soon after knee surgery. :)

ChaLEAN Extreme. It has some jumping in the cardio workouts. However, she always has a modifier to demonstrate low impact stuff but you still get the same effect :)

Do you have a wii Fit? There is a game called the Biggest Loser that totally makes me work up a sweat. Since you can't jump on the fit board, there is obviously not a lot of jumping (but they do have you do jumping jacks off the board to warm up). It's a good workout and minimal jumping.

I don't have a video but have you tried body weight exercises like squats, lunges, planks, push-ups etc?

All of those exercises will help tone and there is no jumping required unless you want too.

Yes, I have a lot of those excercises which my trainer gave me. They definately worked, but I was honestly soo bored doing them that they have been hard to keep up once my trainer and I were done. I basically only did them a couple more times afterwords. I realise I probably need that smiling cheerleader and fun music to help me be consistant in doing my weights. I am very close to my goal weight now, but I'm not happy with my overall shape, so I know I need to get back into toning, but I want to find something I will want to stick with.

My suggestion then, turn on some music you like and get going!

I always have my ipod going when I lift at the gym... and it makes the boring stuff like squats and lunges go quicker cause you can focus on the music and less on the exercise.

I have, in college i took a class. It was no joke, and I definately could use more flexability. But I didn't think of it as being so great for toning. Maybe it is?

I ABHOR yoga (yes, I hate it so much I'll use a funny sounding word to describe my hatred). But what I do know is that I'm a pretty strong guy. I can jog 10k (albeit very slowly) and still standing tall afterwards.

Have me do yoga for 30 minutes and I'll be crying in pain like a baby the next day.

Many of the techniques develop a tremendous amount of core strength. I also know that there are types of yoga more geared towards strength and such (what their called I have no idea, I already told you I hate yoga).

Will it be as great at toning as lifting weights or my vigorous plyo type videos? Probably not, but you do have the constraint you mentioned so you need low impact.
