Some friends and I are signing up for the Boston Run for you Lives 5K. Follow the link to see more information about this really cool sounding race You have to run an obstacle course where there are a bunch of "zombies" who chase you and try to take your health (red pieces of ribbon on a belt) if you lose too many then you turn into a zombie too! There's walls, creeks, logs, etc. Watch the video on the site and look at the pictures from last year. It looks amazing!
I need to train for this since there are a lot of non-running parts to the challenge so thought if anyone else was interested in running either the Boston one, or one closer to wherever you may be, that you'd like to join a get-fit motivating chat thread to keep up going!

A friend and I have decided we are going to train for the one in December 2012 in Austin TX. If all works out as planned it should be a blast!0

That looks hilarious I don't think they do them in England though!0

I'm racing in the one next weekend in Maryland and will likely do the Boston one since I live here. Definitely sounds fun and I'm very curious how tough the obstacles will be!0

Looks excellent! I have a hill on my normal run that I call Zombie Hill, because it's the one I'm going to have to push myself to get up and over in order to survive the zombie apocalypse when it comes!0

Let us know how it goes in Baltimore! I was thinking about this one but I have to go to a wedding that weekend. If you do the Boston one too wave at me as I'm being eaten0 -
This sounds awesome!! Too bad I do not live in Boston0

There's a list of the cities they are doing the runs in, I think there are like 10 different races around the country0 -
OMG!! Thank you so much for posting this!! You seriously made my day!! I will be signing up for the Boston Day next week when I get paid!!!If you do the Boston one too wave at me as I'm being eaten
I'll probably end up getting eaten as well, but at least it will be fun!! :bigsmile:0 -
Nashville TN is doing the Zombie Buffet 5K on October 29. When you sign up, you choose to run as a human or a zombie (it's a costumed race), and there are 4 levels of running. This is my first 5K, so I signed up as a human runner in level 1, which gets the biggest head start before they release the zombies and has the highest human to zombie ratio. I can't wait! The worst that happens is I get my 2 "health" flags taken by zombies, and I become a zombie. Awesome!0

Oh my, what an awesomely awesome race!!!! My daughter totally loves anything zombie, please let us know how it goes!!!0

What a blast!! Many people had troubles getting in because of traffic, but we took a different way in and made it in time for our wave. It was INCREDIBLY muddy (I fell several times climbing hills and trying to dodge zombies) and getting past the zombies required staying in large groups, so it was more of a sprint/walk than a steady jog/run. I didn't find the obstacles very challenging (the wade through a small pond was closed for my wave), but they were fun...with zombies waiting after each one.
The group I went with is definitely doing the Boston one and likely the Baltimore one again next year, and I'd definitely recommend it. They had a few logistical hiccups, but nothing they can't fix before the next few races.0 -
Heyyyyyyyyyy I've been looking for a thread like this! I need something to help motivate me to drop the last ~20 lbs. and get into REAL shape. This sounds like SUCH a fun way to do it, way better than a regular race. Sooooo how do we train for this?! I told my husband and he's in too, but we have no idea where to even begin. Anyone have any ideas? Or want to work together on a training regime? We are planning on doing the LA/San Diego one, which is Oct 2012.0

I started a Group for people who want to run obstacle style races Head on over! There are some training programs on there that I've found0 -
I've already decided that I am definitely going to be doing this next year!!!!! How awesome!! Having zombies chasing me is a sure fire way to get my *kitten* running...lol0

Sooooo how do we train for this?
Definitely join FaugHorn's group for more ideas, but I would recommend hill training (walking and running), interval running, and focusing on balance/agility. Many people I was running near had trained, like me, by running 5Ks...but most of this race was spent sprinting around zombies or walking through inches of slippery mud up or down a steep hill.
As the spring approaches, I would definitely be up for having a training thread among the people on here that plan to participate. I'd also love to get feedback from people that have done the "bigger" adventure races like Tough Mudder on how to train.0
