I'm planning a murder mystery dinner with some of my friends and I was wondering what kind of food ideas everybody had.

Were going to have cocktail hour none of us actually drink so whatever drinks we have are going to be virgin
Then appetizer will be brought out.
After small talk we'll go into the kitchen for the main course
and then last but not least dessert!!!!

The Theme for the night is masquerade if that helps any to

I have a few ideas but none that I feel are totally awesome. So I'm hoping some of you have better ideas thanks!!!!!

When I see the term "masquerade," all I can think of is Phantom of the Opera and Mardi Gras.

Are you guys dressing up? Is there a color scheme?

With the theme masquerade, I can't help but think of healthy foods pretending to be decadent and rich.

virgin margaritas, or bloody Marys, fruit smoothies are great and look great in cups.
You'll want fancy but elegant and easy to prepare.
Chicken Cordon Bleu is easy. or at least i think so. with a elegant stuffed potato. Both which can be prepared ahead and popped in the oven and not worried bout during cocktail hour

We do a lot of hot spiced cider. Ours is Halloween but it's also great in the fall. Put it in a crock pot and take the spices out when they start smelling strong.

For appetizers, you could do some stuffed mushrooms - use a little olive oil instead of butter, or lowfat wholegrain crackers with reduced calorie cheese like laughing cow, or fat free cream cheese with some seasoning in it. Some veggie kabobs might be a fun appetiser too.

I'm not drinking a lot of soda these days, but for the drinks, one thought would be to do a 'diet' version of an old favorite for the ones who want to go that way, while the non-diet would be available for the ones who don't want to go that route. Something like a diet lemon-lime soda with sugar-free cranberry juice and a lemon wedge. It's sparkling, a little tart, and very tasty.

For dessert, you might look at some of the Jell-O "Indulgence" mixes. We made a Chocolate Truffle Indulgence dessert that was 130 calories for a serving. Or something with Angel Food Cake as a base - it's fairly light on the calories. You could do the same with dessert as the drinks and have a "diet" version and a non-diet version. I've made low-cal Trifle that's totally delicious.
