Inauguration

It is not awesome for everyone.
ditto
I have a student who chose to stay home and watch TV instead of come to school. Believe me there will be severe consequences for this unacceptable decision.
I completely agree. No matter what your political views, today is still a historical day. That student probably values that experience and it is probably worth whatever consequences you threaten him with. I know it would be for me. Sorry if you're offended, I don't mean it that way. I just think everyone should witness all of these positive moments in history if they have the chance.
what I find offensive is the notion that his complexion somehow makes this a bigger deal than any other president. Dr. King is famous for stating that he had a dream that someday men will be judged NOT for the color of their skin but for the content of their character. (bold mine) Isn't that in contradiction to the hoopla being made over the first BLACK president? He's just a man. A man who will try his best to do the toughest job in our contry. His facial appearance has very little to do with that.
IMHO- Students who choose television over class attendance are making the wrong decision. Their parents who call them in "sick" are teaching them that lying is okay. I understand and respect your opinion, but the amount of extra media attention to every little thing (the DOG???) is getting tiresome. (for me)
It is a big deal because it shows how far our country has come in such a short time. Fifty years ago no one would have ever dreamed of something like this happening. Racism and discrimination still happens all over the world and today is proof that America has been able to overcome their past.
I marched in the last inaugural parade and it was a big deal for me even though I was too young (high school freshman) to really know the value of it. What if your student had the opportunity to actually be there? Would the same consequences be put into place in that situation?0 -
I'm generally opposed to public schools using the classroom as a venue for pushing teachers' political views on minors.
However, I'd be supportive of schools that hold an assembly during the inaugural address so that students could watch it. But only if they continue to do so for future inaugurations, regardless of the political party of the inaugurated.
I do not think it's acceptable for students to miss class to watch the inauguration. Obama's speech was no longer than 20 minutes in duration. To miss a whole day to watch the news? That's not being part of history. That's just playing hookie.
And why are people so grandiose that they believe watching a television broadcast makes them "part of history"? If you want to be part of history, you need to do something more than just watching TV.0
