Always the one's you don't expect!

I live bordering a really deprived area which I run through, along the canal on the majority of my routes. No matter what time of day or night I run there's always the same 2 alcoholics somewhere along it. A while ago I took to greeting them and smiling, figuring that they were less likely to be a danger and that being polite wouldn't hurt anyway. Today whilst running they weren't sitting on their normal bench but were wondering along the canal, as I ran past them and they stepped aside one of them shouted at me "you're getting much better, keep going!"

Not only was this from one of those I least expected to comment but he reminded me that yes, I am improving again. That simple, nice comment has given me such a confidence boost and made me realise how far I've come.

Have you ever had someone you don't expect motivate you?

That is great. About a year ago a trainer at the gym told me how impressed he was at the change in me since I joined the gym.
  • Not yet, but I like your story! :)

Sometimes, the regulars at the gym i go to will recognize that I've come a long way and congratulate me.
  • You never know when your kindness will be reflected back on you.

Its funny you brought this up because just the other night a man standing outside a restaraunt gave me a high five as I ran by. He didn't say anything, just high fived and gave me a look like "good job" ! I was on the last mile of my run and it gave me quite a kick at the finish!

    and great job btw!!
  • Awesome story!! Clearly by sharing a smile you got an unexpected reward! Gotta love it!!!

My husband, who is the least emotional thing on this earth, who never says anything to anyone about anything....including myself, texted me the night before I ran my first half marathon and the text said " I hope you have fun tomorrow, I am proud of you and love and miss you!" I must have read that a hundred times the morning of the race.

    Thats great :D

I recently moved to Japan and didn't know how how to ride a bike (Yes, I am from the bay area lol...*shun*). I spent the past few days learning and have had tons of help from Japanese~

Men and women have gone out of their ways to help me learn...I thought it was very sweet, especially since despite already helping me, they would often say, "Your japanese is so good" or "You are so beautiful" >_<

I even had this women in her 80s or so step outside of her house and cheer me on!

    Two, actually.

Monday thru Friday, I walk the same route every day at lunch. For the past 3 1/2 years. It's an industrial area. I see the same guys unloading trucks at one place quite frequently. Couple months ago, one of them stopped what he was doing, got off the forklift, and walked over to me. Introduced himself and told me that I really looking fit. Now, everyday when I walk by, he waves and shouts some kind of encouragement if he;s out.

The other is a woman that I see every Saturday and Sunday morning when I go on my walk. She's probably 70 (at least). I am usually headed south walking to the Trail, when I come accross her. She's always headed North on the opposite side of the street. Jogging. Pretty good pace too. We just exchange "good mornings" but I'm amazed that I see her every single day for the last 10 years. She'll probably outlive me by 20 years.

Today I was busy getting dinner ready while my husband was with the kids, when out of the blue he says "from the back, you're waist is really getting defined." Checkin out the back, oh yeah. And I wasn't even trying. ;-)

For a loading dock worker to compliment someone like that, you must have really made an impression. :-)
