I am new to this and am already finding it a challenge to not eat like I was eating... I am trying to start out slowly with working out and dieting at the same time. I have set aside an hour a day for working out and then trying to stay under the calories I am given... Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to meeting more people in the same situation as me. I am a young mom of two a five and a three year old. I gained like seventy pounds since the first pregnancy and have not had much motivation until now to lose it. All I want is to be there for my kids more than my own mom was for me. As in family, I do not have much support on my side. My sid of the family are all "bigger boned" or at least that is what they say... They say that once you get bigger the genetics take over and you are stuck being bigger. I am going to prove that wrong. Obesity is a killer and I don't want to have all the health problems that are in my near future if I don't do something about it. Thank you for your time if anyone reads this. lol.

First of all ... Good for you .. Starting good habits now, will last a life time, and set a good example for your kids. Which is soooo important for everyone!

My advice is to track what your are eating for a week or two... and then honestly evaluate it. What are the "costly" items (ie lots of calories without filling you up?) ... what are the items that you like that fill you up, and don't "cost" a lot? Are you getting enough calcium? Potassium? Protein? Too many carbs? too much salt? Start tweaking your menu ... one thing at a time. An all out change right away might be too overwhelming; but making minor tweaks become good habits that stick.

Take the time to look at things that you can substitue ... for example: nature's own makes a good 100% whole wheat bread that is 50 calories a slice in lieu of 100 ... You find all kinds of things to help you on your journey. My son calls it nutrition density ... getting the bang for your buck calorie-wise.

This should lead to getting in the habit of really reading and understanding labels and spending a little bit of time really truly thinking about what you are buying and cooking ... you can find all kinds of places to cut calores ... and make healthier choices ... One item at a time.

For instance, my mom turned me on to putting a little "Kitchen bouquet" in ground turkey so that it "looks" like ground beef and my family doesn't even realize I did the substitue.... use it for chil, tacos, burgers, etc .... A lot better for you than ground beef.

The obvious thing is to greatly increase fruits and vegetables ... finding a local farmers market and getting the kids involved can make the weekly fruit and veggie run a bit fun.

Anyway, I hope this is helpful. the bottom line is that it is a lifestyle .. not a diet .. you make healthy habits a part of your family lifestyle, from taking walks together after dinner, to putting more fruits and veggies on the plate ... and all the little things here and there that add up.

The other side of the coin is burning calories ... finding time to walk, build muscle ... etc etc what can you do with the kids?

The point is to be patient, make small changes here and there and everywhere (I sound like Dr. Seuss...lol) ... and the body changes will happen.

PS .. Those after dinner walks, and swimming sessions are some of the best conversations I ever had with my son .. they started out as a way for me to burn calories and turned into "bonding" time ... I wish you the same love and bonding with your children!
