hi all!!! i'm hoping to get some advice from the "pros" around here. up until last week i was running and doing Insanity. loved it!!! i love exercising and feeling great!!! however, i now have a herniated disc. i do NOT want this to affect my weight loss. i played with my settings and put down "sedentary" (broke my heart, btw). according to MFP i should consume 1220 calories in order to lose. i'm currently 5'5 and 145 pounds.
does this sound ok to you? should i consume more or less than 1220?

  • around 1200 should be good. You may need to adjust +-100 depending on how your own body is. The BMR calc's use generic formulas; your body may be different. Good well soon!

Hi...so sorry to hear about your back. Yes, you can still lose! I am older than you (55), weigh 154.4 and am 5'4" and have a bulging disc and spur on my spine, along with another medical condition which keeps me more sedentary than active. However, I regularly use a Wii Fit Plus and recumbent stationary bike for exercise and follow MFP's recommended 1200-calorie-a-day goal. Since July, I have lost almost 14 pounds after finding out that I have elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels (which is what brought me to MFP to begin with). I tell you all this so that you do not lose hope as it IS possible to lose weight and keep fit despite your herniated disc. You CAN do it! : ) Best wishes to you and God bless!

I sit on my butt for 8 hours a day at my job and have a 1200 cal per day allowance. I have recently started going laps of walking around the parking lot on my 2 breaks for exercise. I walk in the evenings at home also. I too have a bad back from a car accident in 2006, so I can't do anything too crazy as far as workouts, however I have lost 13 pounds in 24 days and that isn't even eating PERFECTLY healthy. So yes ma'am it is possible. If you're allowed to and can, just walk as much as you can and log it. If not, do stretches that you can do without pain, that burns calories. I hope you feel better soon!
