So I just joined this site in an inspiration to try something new. While I'm new to the site, I don't consider myself new to fitness. I was a competitive swimmer for about 15 years and swam all the way up through college. My training was very rigorous, up to 9 practices in a week and 28 hours a week swimming or working out.
However, those days are about a year behind me and I've turned to new pursuits. I'm an intern, my primary position throughout the day is a sitting one, and I'm struggling with keeping my own work out schedule (as opposed to one that has been orchestrated and reinforced by a coach or trainer). Also, transitioning from a lifestyle that demands a high calorie/high carb diet to one that does not has proven a challenge...simply because up until now, lapses in willpower weren't an issue as my swim the next morning would most likely burn calories up into the thousands.
As a former competitive athlete, in the last few months I've channeled my energies and my habit of exercise into a new goal: I'm running a marathon.
The race is in February and I've been training since about July. My only goal is to run the whole thing, no walking. However, with my intern position my only time to run/work out is in the early hours before work (5:30) and on the weekends. I'm just looking for a forum that I can use to read and communicate with other people who are running and pursuing good and healthy lifestyles.
.
...AND the calorie counter is pretty handy too. Anyone who has running/dieting experience please feel free to pop in!

Good luck man, I'm in a similar position, competitive lifting and rugby up through college and then...sitting on my butt for 10 hours a day. I fell off pretty hard for about 5 years before trying to get back into it so you're in a much better situation. Good luck!0 -
It's a great site, welcome and good luck!0

I'm in the same/similar boat- competed seriously for 12 years, then coached a bit, did a triathlon (then remembered i HATE biking) and then trained for a half marathon----
nowwww i'm just working on boring science-y pursuits all day! not as much fun! but still trying to stay strong!
Good luck on the marathon!
