Is anyone familiar with the Girls on the Run Organization? I had not heard of it before, but think I'll participate in an upcoming 5K being sponsored here locally.

  • It is a great organization! My 9 yr-old niece ran her first 5K with them last year. They teach nutrition, fitness, and self-esteem to young girls in an afterschool type venue, which culminates in the girls completing a 5 K.

I know that schools do it for yound girls to find a way to stay healthy and have a positive self image. At the school I was at last year they had a girls on the run club. Im not sure if it has to be a school thing or not or how long the club lasts. But at the end of the school year the girls got to do a 5k together. They had practices, workout sessions, and talked about self esteem.

But, like I said don't know if its just for schools or not.
  • There have been posters up at work for our annual campaign. I signed up to be a running buddy! I just run with a local 3rd, 4th or 5th grader in November and then again at the final 5K in December! I'm really looking forward to supporting such a great cause. I highly recommend you get involved :)

I don't know of them from experience, but the author of a blog I frequently read mentions them often: http://www.healthytippingpoint.com/
