Just Starting

I am into my second week with a starting weigh-in of 250! I am looking to loose 80 pounds the right way. I hate cardio but I am pledging twenty minutes a day four days a week on the treadmill and then at least forty-five minutes on the weight machines. I really feel the need to do more cardio, but I wonder if the weight machines pick-up the slack from not doing more on the treadmill. Looking for comments!

you don't need to do cardio to lose weight. really, you don't need to exercise to lose weight. 80% of fat loss (at least) is dictated by what you eat and drink. Get that part right first. Then, do some exercise that you enjoy. If you don't like treadmill cardio, you don't need to do it. Lots of research suggests resistance training is better for fat loss anyway. I personally like HIIT...which gives you a combo of cardio and resistance training in the same workout. For examples of HIIT that I do...as well as references to a couple of places where you can find routines...see my efficient workout blog below.
EDIT: Let me add that since you're just starting out, you should not attempt the sprint interval work-outs at this time. perhaps a jog/walk interval if you like. Anyway, as I mention in a post later on in this thread, start off slowly...even without exercise. build as you progress on your journey.0 -
Welcome to MFP! I started out just using my treadmill several times a week because I was so out of shape. It's been almost 4 months and I have greatly improved. I can now workout 5-6 days a week between 60-80 minute on the treadmill at 7-8 % incline at 4.0-4.5 mph. I recently added 30 Day Shred workout to my program. You can do it, just keep doing what what you are doing and slowly increase it if needed. Good luck to you on your weight loss journey0

as you can see from my signature below, we both have essentially the same starting and goal weights. As I indicated above, you do not need to exercise to begin losing weight. I did not exercise AT ALL for the first 2 and a half months (i know, blasphemy, right). I lost about 21-23 pounds during that time. I then did some cardio exercises for about 2 months after that. It was during that time that I read about HIIT, began putting together a home gym, and came up with some HIIT routines that have since been refined further. In short, I focused on getting the nutrition right first. Then I added some exercise. Then I increased the intensity of my exercise. There is no need to jump in with both feet too quickly. Make some changes...see success...make more changes...see more success...etc.
Good luck to you on your journey.0
