I'm seriously thinking about getting a personal trainer, but shoot, trying to find one where I live is a chore. Any advice or suggestions as to whether should I get one or do things on my own? Do you use one? Results?

Thanks!

I go to a gym where you can buy individual sessions with a personal trainer, and I LOVE doing that. It keeps me on track and helps me learn new machines and exercises at the gym. I do it every few months. It's too expensive to get a personal trainer for regular sessions though.

I have had a trainer for 3 weeks and I have lost 10.6lbs. My strength has improved and the muscle definition is awesome! I would recommend a trainer if you have the budget for you. I have had to sacrifice for the trainer, but its a good sacrifice for now.

My best months happened when I had my trainer... had him for about 5 years. Been slacking since I let him go... ... ... considering bringing him back, so thanks for the post!

I have a personal trainer twice a week - she comes to my house (or local playing field) and brings all the equipment. Its more expensive than a gym obviously, but the results are great.

My main reason for this is illness, and I've chosen someone who is an exercise referral specialist. She therefore works around my limitations in ways I just couldn't do alone.

Edit to add - I found her by typing "personal trainer" and my postcode into google and it took less than 10 mins to get a list of about 5 that come to the house

I just started training with a trainer. One sentence:

Hire a trainer to see what you are REALLY capable of doing.

    :)

Of course, I curse her the day after a workout - but that passses.

I agree with the above posts.. people say PT's are a waste of money etc. but I think they are fantastic. They know how to push you harder than you would be able to push yourself, they know lots of great exercises that you may not have seen/thought of. Plus it's good to have a person "spot" you, box with you, throw you a medicine ball and so on.

I have a PT that I see once a week - we do half hour of intense circuit training. I'd like to see her twice a week but I simply can't afford it. It costs about $35 AUD per session, so $175AUD for 5 x 30 min sessions.

If you want to save yourself some money or paying for overpriced personal trainers. Try doing your best with research and asking questions here in the forums. That's what MFP forum is for, help, aid, assist and motivate each other. If you honestly feel your not capable of doing it yourself, then your last option can be with a personal trainer. I advise you learn on your own first before you start entrusting a personal trainer and shelling out $$$.

There are some things that PT's can do for you that you simply can't do for yourself - they will teach you about proper form during exercises, how to do the exercises properly and so on. I really recommend at least 1 session with a PT to show you the ropes. Most gyms that I have been to offer a free PT session.

Yes, the gym I go to does have that free initial session and I have that this coming Tuesday. :) I've belonged to the gym since Feb. and just doing that session. I do want the proper form and etc. Thanks!
