Protein powder question

I have some whey protein powder that I've been using after my workouts. Now, this is probably a silly question, but if I don't put in a hard workout but am still under my protein goal, can (should?) I still use the protein powder? I'm not entirely sure how it works and am not sure if it wouldn't be absorbed properly or something. I have a hard time getting in my protein without it without going over my calorie limit.
Thanks so much for any advice!

It's a protein supplement and I use mine to up my protein intake because I don't want the extra calories from eating protein sources with higher fat content.

If you are unable to get your minimum protein macro requirements from whole foods (regardless if you worked out that day or not), then yes you should probably use a protein powder supplement.

My doc recommends 55-60 grms of protein a day for me so I almost always have a whey/milk/ice shake for breakfast. That gets me off to a good start with 25 gms. I have been doing that for three years and all of my blood work show normal values. I hope that helps.

I use protein powder almost everyday whether or not I workout. It's ok to consume it at times other than post workout.
  • You can absolutely use it to supplement your daily nutrition. I have a protein shake every morning because I'm a skip-breakfast sort of person, always running late, etc. So I make a 350 cal protein shake most weekday morning with 1/3 packet of 42g Myoplex choc powder, 1/2 banana, 1 T of natural peanut butter and a tsp of honey. Tastes fantastic and gets me a quick meal I can take out the door and delivers a good morning protein blast.
