Dear MFP community,

Yesterday I accomplished something really amazing for myself: I ran my first 5K, came in with my personal best time, and came in 7th in my entire division of females from 20-24 years of age. I never in my life imagined that me, the girl who literally used to skip gym class on the day when we needed to run the mile, would be running for fun! It opened my eyes to the fact that I am really capable of doing anything. So now, I have more impetus to change the things that are keeping me back from my weight loss goals... but I need your help!
I am someone who will eat well throughout the day but since I study late at night, I start to eat the worst things later on. I get the urge to eat the sugary, carb-loaded crap that I know I am not supposed to. I go to bed feeling guilty and I don't want to be doing this anymore.
Any suggestions? And yes, I already know I can eat carrots instead... but when I am bored I get the urge to eat things that are small, crunchy, and sweet! I really need someone who will just yell at me and not let me eat past 9 pm... lol

Thank you MFP!

Sincerely,
Erica

DO NOT EAT PAST 9pm!!!!!!!!! hehe .. welcome and good job to you so far! I agree it's tough - possibly you are not getting in enough protein during the day so you are craving things at night? Maybe get some 100 cal snacks to have on hand for those times but plan for them in your calorie allotment when you really need them? Good luck!!

Just wanted to say well done on that 5k! That's really impressive! Sounds like you know what you really need to do about the evening munchies, but if you really can't switch to something low cal, why not just make sure you allocate some cals just for that, pre-plan what your munchies will be and stick to that? And remember, if you don't have it in the house you can't eat it!
    Good luck

hahah somehow living with three guys, the bad food always sneaks into the house! I try to buy good things but then it is always SOMETHING! But I really love your suggestion... I just need to limit myself to a certain calorie allotment and say- ENOUGH! I just need a motivator and I know MFP has people on here that are excellent at that!
  • air popped popcorn (unsalted, unbuttered) is a very good snack... can't quite remember if its completely fat free, low in cals or what the stats are, i just know its good for u. well as good as a snack can be i guess.

Hi Erica! Sometimes we all just need a little support... and that's why we are all here. Feel free to friend me if you'd like, that way we can support each other regularly. Typically I have felt like you are feeling... the later the night wore on, the worse snack choices I made! I know that going to bed early isn't an option, so take all the advice that was given above...Plan for those late-night snacks. Maybe plan for two or three small snacks of about 100 calories each and that should see you through. There are a lot of posts with snack idea... or start another thread asking for 100 calorie snack ideas... I'd actually be interested in some new ideas myself! Some of mine are: two ryvita rye crisps with one triangle Laughing Cow cheese spread; sliced apple with a FEW nuts; popcorn, sliced cheese and lunchmeat rolled together, homemade bean dip with veggies (mine tastes like refried beans without the deadly lard!); 30g musli with 50g greek yogurt, one pomegranate (only 100 calories, and takes forever to eat)... also challenge yourself to drink an extra bottle of water while you study. okay... so I would love to encourage you. I know you can do this. You came to the right place!

  • Good job for trying to change your attitude. If you can and have the time, try to burn more calories. Like 900 cal in 105 minutes ..... :D and probably you can eat something "nice" for your lunch which will stay till your dinner time.

I see someone already suggested popcorn, and I was about to suggest some kettle corn. So that might be a winner!

I know how you feel it is very tough to stop this habit... I have been trying also! Sometimes I try just having a diet soda and fruity gum... Sometimes this works. Or I try some crunchy veggies and diet soda. I dont know if this will work for you but it sometimes works for me!
