Too much sugar w/ out even realizing it!

Sooo, I've been trying to cut back on sugar, but i noticed what i brought to work.....Special K Protein bars, danon light and fit vanilla yogurt, and cinnabon cream of wheat! I guess that's a little better than bringing candy in, but still...all of them are sweet! I grew up eating so much candy and chocolate everyday that switching to "healthier" foods seemed like a step in the right direction, but they are all still on the sugary side...Dunno what to do to cut it down!

    You're doing a lot better. It's smart to watch sugar but don't freak out about it. :) It won't make you fat if you're staying within your calorie goal.

    all yogurt is going to have some sugar in it but i eat plain (greek) and add my own sweetner like fruit or honey. same for the cream of wheat.

    Those aren't that bad. Now if you were eating Snickers, Reese's Cups and the like, THAT sugar would be horrible. You're doing well though!

    Fruit has a lot of sugar too, but it's natural.

    The nutritionist I spoke with says that it doesn't matter whether your carbs are from sugar or other sources as long as you're staying within your carbs limit for the day. Obviously you'll be full longer and get to eat more if you choose the right KIND of carbs but, to your body, carbs are carbs.

    Try greek yogurt....I like adding honey, agave nectar, choco powder, etc. And by adding your own you are controlling how much you add. I eat oatmeal every morning, but I buy the old fashioned oats and I add my own stuff, cinnamon, agave...again its controlling how much you add and not eating everything that is so processed.

    I think it is good to keep watch of your sugar..specifically processed sugar.. if you have to unwrap it to eat it ( sugar wise) then I personally
    try to limit these items as mush as possible. You may want to take a read of Eat Clean by Tosca Reno, she explains how modified sugars affect your weight, weight loss and cravings. Even if your sugar intake is within your calorie goal, modified sugars, flavours etc keep the weight on- just a thought
  • I notice that I always end up going over on my sugar according to MFP, but I agree with what I'm seeing here. It's not OK to eat a bunch of candy everyday, chose the sugar wisely. Fruit will put you over, just like candy, but you know its better for you and your body. Even something seemingly harmless as Vitamin Water will put you over the sugar limits! If you stay within your calories and carbs you should be ok.

    Have you considered a sugar substitue like agave? or stevia? Just buy plain oatmeal and add your own sweetener.

    Honestly, I don't pay much attention to those because MFP does not separate bad sugars (corn syrup, etc.) from good/natural sugars (lactose). I wouldn't worry about it.

    Well for me, it's not really all about staying under my calorie goal, I wanna lower sugar for health reasons such as diabetes since it runs in my family.

    I've never tried substitutes like agave or stevia. I should tho! I don't really know anything about them. Can you put them in EVERYTHING? Like coffee, oatmeal etc.? And which one is sweeter?

    I haven't tried stevia, but agave is pretty sweet. I actually only use about 1/3 or 1/2 of what is a serving (according to the label) because that is about all you need. The agave I buy actually comes in flavors too..orginal, raspberry and blueberry.
