Hi MFP! Does anyone on here eat at least over 100g carbs per day.. and subtract their fiber intake to get the actual amount of carbs? I've heard that subtracting your fiber from carbs, gives you more of the exact amount of carbs your taking in. Just wondering to see if anyone has done this, been successful at still losing weight or maintaining.. & believes in this being accurate or not??

  • Yup! I did that for a while. If you hit your protein, fat, and carb intake for the day, do you ever notice you have calories left? Its because of fiber :]

Fiber doesn't impact your blood sugar so if you're watching carbs, you can subtract the fiber grams to see the net total of carb grams you've eaten which DO impact your blood sugar. This is most useful for diabetics and those eating on a low carb nutritional plan. For those who believe that calories are calories it's not necessary to worry about it.

Technically, you're only supposed to subtract insoluble fiber, as soluble fiber has calories. Most nutrition labels don't count or use insoluble fiber because it's 0 calories, so essentially you're cheating yourself by subtracting it twice. The fiber listed on the label as "dietary fiber" is soluble fiber, which still has calories. So subtracting that is really inaccurate.
