Fitness Gear for Cold Weather

Good evening pals de fitness! I've gotten into the good habit of walking/sprinting on a regular basis and it feels terrific! What doesn't feel terrific though, it being too cold or too hot while I'm running. Obviously if I don't wear enough layers my muscles get cold, stiff and less flexible, which makes for a very unpleasant experience. On the other hand, I do generate quite a bit of heat when I run, and if I have too many layers I feel like I'm getting trapped. Do you more seasoned runners have any personal choices for running wear? I'd love to find something that can obviously keep me warm, but maybe be breathable like wick at the same time.

I love LL Bean. You might try something like this.

There are a lot of technical fabrics out there that wick moisture and can provide warmth with little bulk. UA does make a lot, but there are cheaper alternatives that still get the job done if you shop around. Stay away from cotton is the key. Many outer wear jackets also have zippered slots that you can open to allow heat to escape.

For those of you who know me, you know Treadmill is a dirty word. I can't stand to run on them so I spend a great deal of time outside running year round. Winter running gear should always be applied in layers such that you can open a zipper or remove a layer if you overhear. How I dress, depends greatly on how cold it is

These typically work for me and I 've never been stung with severe frostbite, or frozen extremities while using these (in fact more often than not, I am overheating by the time I am done and am literally steaming) In an ideal world, you should be a little cold before you start running outside. This allows you to compensate for the heat you are about to generate.

For anything within 10 degree's of freezing

    base layer of underarmor
    nylon shell
    running tights/pants
    dual layer socks

For colder more than 10 degree's below freezing

    base layer of underarmor
    polar fleece sweater
    nylon shell
    running tights and wind pants
    dual layer socks
    hat
    mittens

    For cold approaching -40

    base layer of underarmor
    long sleeve technical shirt
    heavy fleece jacket
    heavy gortex shell
running tights and lined track pants
    2 pairs dual layer socks
    balaclava
    sheepskin mittens

Footwear: I add yak tracks or short machine screws to the bottoms of my shoes for traction.

Ipod/Cell phone: I keep these in a ziplock bag on an inside pocket where my body heat keeps them from freezing. The ziplock back keeps them dry.

    Hope that helps someone!
  • adidas cold climate gear...any sports store should have it now.. don't go to heavy and warm up inside and then go outdoors so your body won't be shocked! :flowerforyou:
  • Alright! Thanks a lot for the suggestions guys! I'm fortunate enough to work at a Wal-Mart and next to an Olympia Sports with a ****'s Sporting goods on the way. When I go into work tomorrow I'll take a look at some of the offbrands and such then check out some of the higher quality gear I can get from the specialty stores. :)
