That person was totally out of line in saying that to you. If you wanted to get litigious, I bet you would have a case.0
-
I hope you tell him to take his job offer somewhere else. You could say something like, "I don't think being overweight would affect my efficiency, but working for an *kitten* definitely would. wtf.0
-
Holy poop, that is so illegal in the states it's not even funny.
What a *kitten*.0 -
Can he do that? I think you should report him to the company, not very professional on his part.0
-
I think this is more common then we all realize. I know that I'm always nervous about this when I go in for a job interview. I also believed that it once contributed to my getting "laid off" ... A customer complained about my being overweight. Such is life but these shall hopefully be a thing of that for us here as we are trying to change. It's just unfortunate that FAT people have this disgust and hate from people.0
-
That's rude and in poor taste, but not really illegal. Overweight people aren't a protected class in the anti-discrimination law.0
-
I feel like that could be reported as discrimination!!! Totally inappropriate and unprofessional.
I have been made fun of plenty of times for my weight in the past. Never told it affected me as an employee.
I am SO sorry that happened to you. That is horrible.0 -
I interviewed at a clothing store once when I weighed about 130lbs and didn't get the job. About a year later, I went back and interviewed and weighed about 110 lbs and was hired immediately. I don't know if it was the weight loss or what. Same manager and everything.0

That is the ultimate definition of being totally unprofessional. .as well as the fact that the question should of never been posed in the first place. . A job can require a physical if they like. . but the way that was handled was outright rude and uncalled for.0
-
My response probably would've sounded something like this:
Interviewer: You're a little fat y'know.
Me: You're a little *kitten*.
Interviewer: That was uncalled for.
Me: Oh, sorry. I thought it was "point out the obvious that has nothing to do with this job" day. (probably followed by a middle finger or two)
As for the other question about whether I have a prejudice or not, I don't believe that fat people are lazy or somehow work less hard. Even when I was obese, I worked very hard at everything I did except my health. I know better. I just think that, for whatever reason, they don't value themselves enough, especially people I see who can barely walk, get out of a chair on their own, or are restricted to a wheelchair (because of weight), have weight-related diabetes issues, etc. I mostly just feel very sorry that they won't take care of themselves. It makes me more sad than anything.0 -

^^^^ This
I guess I am prejudice against fat people, well not people but myself. That's why I decided to get healthy I guess.0 -
I was told something like that, but I responded by telling him I could always lose weight but he would always be ignorant, case closed0
-
I'm always paranoid in interviews because of this, and I think it shows
That really sucks.0 -
That's so rude & very unprofessional in all aspects regardless of where state or country you live. That would be quite understandable if you're applying as a model but otherwise these people don't have the right to point out somebody's weight. That's totally none of their business.0
-
That was totally out of line and unless it was witnessed it would be a your word against his/her, but I'd repeort him/her anyway because that is just bull. I do the majority of the hiring where I work and while being overweight can be a factor because we walk about 3-5 miles a day back and forth across the ranch, that borders on discrimination.0

It's a sad but true fact, even when people don't open their mouth a shove both feet in there, fit people (not skinny but fit) are viewed differently than overweight people or really thin people. It's not right, but it's true. You even view yourself differently when you are fit. So don't worry about the *kitten* of the world, just work on being healthy. When i was too skinny people ALWAYS had something to say. Even though it was a natural thing with me (i'm over thirty and my body is waay over that) Some people think this ****. Other people will actually say it. Don't worry about the *kitten* in the world. Just worry about how healthy and fit you can be. My body fat is currently at 45 %. But I am 130 lbs. People tell me I am vain for trying to get in shape. People used to tell me I was on drugs when I was skinny. When I was 175lbs after I had my son people told me I was fat and said my butt was big. Haters gonna hate no matter what you do. Thats why you can only worry about you and your opinion and actions.0

Ok Here's the dope. This will happen and has happened, and will continue to happen, because most people wether they like it or not natually associate fat with lazy, stupid, dirty do nothing people, when it couldn't further than the truth. If you think about it, its the same adjectives that are used to describe any minority from a racist point of view. You are fat , they think you are fat, but to be honest and I know I AM ALONE on this.. totally, but I would be glad he said what he was thinking. At that point I can deal with his concerns as opposed to him walking off thinking it and me not knowing. I want to know this company employs such a douche bag.
So many people pretend to accept fat people when really deep down, where no one talks about ... they don't, but, they will smile to your face and say the right things but you know what they are really thinking. I know you all do because I know you have all expierenced that subtle discrimination or that look just before they know they shouldn't say something. This is the society we live in and we have to deal with on a daily basis. I don't think its easy and wish I was your writer at the time to give you the best one liner to his face. The best we can do is learn from it, Fill out a review on glassdoor.com, call thier HR department and submit a formal complaint, file with the BBB, Let your recuiter know, get a lawyer consult see if you have a case, then file an discrimination lawsuit, hopefully win and retire. hmmmm maybe...0 -
actually i couldn't really say much mainly coz of my personal interest.... that job can be something really big for me and a break i have been lukin for over 2 years now........ but ofcourse doesn't mean i'll take any crap from him....... :grumble:
i just changed the topic...but if ever again he says that i would definitely hit back hard.......
it just felt bad that people simply judge you by the way you look!!!!! :frown:0
