I'm 5'7", 35 years old, and trying to lose a total of 18 pounds to get to 140. Since it's a fairly small amount of weight, is 1 pound a week reasonable, or is 1/2 pound a week a better goal?

Sounds reasonable to me as well, just be willing to be flexible if 1 pound a week is too aggressive of a weight loss for you. I am also 5'7" and 35 years old. I went from 175 to (currently) 148, with a goal of 145. Feel free to friend me if you'd like support!

sounds reasonable for now, once you get to the last 10-15 you should switch it up to the 0.5 lbs/week.
  • Start with 1 lb per week, and if you are really struggling then change it to 1/2 lb per week. Find what works for you, no one is the same. Good luck!

1lb a week is reasonable but if it doesn't work change it.
    Wishing you all the best.

1lb per week is reasonable, definitely, but just make sure to do it right, and don't freak out if the scale doesn't show 1lb this week - might show 2lbs next week! :)
  • Wow.. you are doing great..... Keep up the good work. :) This is working for me. I was shocked to the amount of calories i logged. This is making me be more aware of what I put in my mouth. !!

    I did 1 lb a week until I got to 1200 calories.
Then I went to 1/2 lb a week.
It's worked out well for me.

I also checked out what the maintenance calories for my goal weight would be.
And I've been upping my goal by 100 calories every couple of pounds, so I'll be closer to knowing how to eat for maintenance and won't have another dramatic shift in my eating habits.

When I lose one more pound and I'll add the last hundred calories to get me at maintenance for 5 lbs less than I weigh now.
    So those last 5 will be R E A L L Y . . . S L O W . . . but after battling my weight my whole life I'm all about find a way to maintain.

Well I've been eating a lot of chicken nuggets and junk like that. :-p I'm trying to keep my calories down to a reasonable level and slowly start changing to healthier foods overall.

A couple of years ago, I lost 30 pounds pretty quickly by following Jillian Michaels's plan. I still think that plan was pretty healthy but it was too different from my normal (terrible) eating habits, so I gained most of the weight back. That's why I'm trying to change slowly this time!
  • One pound, average, is reasonable. Generally consistent healthy dieting and exercise can result in an average loss of 1% of excess body weight per week.
