Severe knee pain going up stairs

It just started yesterday when I was going up my stairs. I got this sudden, sharp pain like a shock or needles going into my kneecap. Anyone experience this? What is it? Does it go away on it's own? It is a mild discomfort when I walk but definitely worse on stairs. I didn't injure it or twist anything that I'm aware of. I typically walk as my exercise of choice & am not sure what to do now, don't want to make it worse.

Have you tried talking to a doctor about this?

I agree with jilliebk... ice, rest, wrap it up with an Ace bandage, and if it's not better in a week or so, make an appointment to see your doctor. Never EVER take knee pain lightly. Chances are, you just tweaked it and it'll be fine.
