What kind of Dog and/or Cat food do you feed your pets, and why? How does it compare to your own eating habits?

If you are vegetarian, vegan, anti-gmo, etc... does that effect how you feed your pet?
Do you feed them holistic, freeze-dried, all natural, etc. Or do you just buy whatever is on sale?

I only feed Nutro All natural food to my dog, he eats better than we do. we just like that everything is in it natural for him, he likes it, and we have noticed a big difference in how much less he poops now that we use a good food over a grocery store brand
  • i feed my dogs eukanuba, honestly its probably a better quality food than i often times feed myself, sometimes i wish there was just a kibble we could eat as humans that was the perfect and only source of food we need, i would gladly eat the same thing all the time lol

My one dog is diabetic so I feed them all Blue Buffalo Wilderness. It's hella-expensive, but the good thing is they send me coupons when I write to them. =) That $5.00 isn't much, but it helps. I also mix in wet food, like Nutro or Nature's Recipe. Beware of dog foods that their first ingredient isn't a protein, like chicken or turkey or fish. If it's something like a by-product (wheat, soy or corn), it's crap and full of preservatives. Not everyone can afford the high priced dog foods, but in the long run, it'll be cheaper on your pocketbook from the vet bills. Also, remember dogs only see in black and white -- the whole "color" theme (think Beneful with it's reds, browns and oranges) are for humans, not the dog.

dog - First Mate...its made here in British Columbia (might be only a local thing). It's all natural, top line ingredients etc and she loves it.

our fat cat eats Science Diet...but doesn't seem to be helping her. she's a big lazy blob. :-)

I feed my 4 Siberian Huskies on a brand of kibble called Fish4Dogs. The breed can have very sensitive stomachs so I did a lot of research in to what was a good food...this has been great for them!!

My cat was being fed on Fish4Cats too but, unfortunately, she's almost 16 now and suffers from a lot of constipation (tmi?!) so I've had to swap her over to wet food...she's now on Gourmet...and thankfully quite regular lol!!

I was so shocked to find out what goes in to some of the cheaper brands of pet food (stuff I couldn't even pronounce) and I certainly wouldn't have been happy feeding it to myself or my husband so my doggies weren't going to have it either!!

My kitty eats special food for her urinary health. I used to just feed her Iams until i discovered she had a urinary health issue. It's expensive, but she's healthy and doesn't pee all over the palce :) What a nightmare that was!!! And the poor thing would cry everytime she peed :(

My favorite (cat food) is blue buffalo! It's awesome.

I was trying out the Purina One Beyond for a while, but I think I'll stick with Blue Buffalo. It seemed to keep them healthiest and happiest.

We breed CKC registered Labs, with very good Field Trial bloodlines, all they are fed is Purina Pro Plan and everyone we sell a puppy to we recommend that that stay with Purina Pro Plan. It is the best Dog Food!!

My dog was on Blue Buffalo but the vet recently tested her blood and said her protein levels were to high, so we just switched to Wellness. So far so good.

My dog won't eat store bought food, I have tried every brand and type you can think of. I talked to my vet and he suggested just feeding her things like chicken and beef that I would eat my self. So I slow cook the meat for 24 hours so that the bones are super super soft and break apart so I can get the marrow out of them to mix in with the meat, and I blend it up and make her dog food at home.

I do add things to the food so she is not missing any nutrients or anything but before I started this weightloss/healthy eating she was eating better than I was.

We feed our cockapoo Taste of the Wild. It's grain-free and she does great on it. Her protein levels are fine. We get the venison version.
  • I make my dog's food once a week. I start with a lean protine then add veggies high in zinc and magnesium along with organic brown rice. I also feed her cottage cheese with ground flaxseed and honey.

Although I wish I ate better, all five of my babies definately eat healthier than I do, lol. They have been one of my insperations to eat healthier though.
My ferrets are, mostly, on a balanced home made raw diet because they are obligate carnivores. Three of them are adopted and one of the adopted ferrets is our oldest male, Mojito, and unfortunately the damage of years of eating low-grade kibble had already been inflicted on him. Mojito has insulinoma. I would still keep him on a 100% raw diet, but because of the insulinoma he can't have feeding times- he has to be able to graze all day otherwise he could have a seizure and/or slip into a coma and pass away. So, he has Innova Evo Cat food available to graze at all times (Innova Evo cat food is the only cat food that is nutritionally sufficent for a ferret, it's actually the same as Evo's ferret food, except it has higher taurine which is essential to a ferrets diet and it has lower carbs which contribute to insulinoma) + he gets raw soupies with his meds and when the other ferrets (SoCo, Captain Morgan and Kahlua) get fed.
My Chihuahua, Tequila, gets Evo dog kibble and B.G. canned food that I mix with raw a few times a week. I have had a lot of trouble with trying to switch him to a completely holistic diet... I've done everything suggested to me but a 100% raw meal usually ends up all over the floor. I wish we had a holistic vet that I can consult with but the only vet I know that condone's raw is two counties away and deals in exotics not dogs (I already asked him, he isn't comfortable with giving advice on how to do raw with a dog).
We are currently awaiting our first free sample of a freeze dried diet for him with our fingers crossed :)

    I don't have a pet so I can't answer this personally.

However, I do have a cousin interstate who married a vegan and raised a vegan cat. I felt so sorry for it, it looked frail.

My opinion is that it's in a felines nature to eat meat, that's how they're built with all their senses, and it's cruel to deprive them.

I normally buy Purina One for indoor cats but I switched to Science Diet for Sensitive Skin again because my cat has such flaky skin and he scratches so bad. The Science Diet for Sensitive Skin cat food cleared his skin up before.

Currently my dogs eat Diamond dog food, it's not the best but it's a decent food for a decent price and i'm really really broke right now.

When i get back on my feet they'll be eating Merrick, it's a great food but quite a bit more expensive.

i put more thought and research into my dogs food than I have my own lol, and no matter how poor i get i'll never feed them anything less than diamond. It at least has no corn and no by products.

I always urge people to do a little research about pet foods because while the high quality foods may cost a little more, you usually save money in the long run because you feed less because the animal is getting more nutrients from the food and less vet bills because better foods tend to keep pets healthier. Also less poop to clean up ;)

A few months ago I switched my 2 dogs and my 2 cats over to Taste of Wild. I've definatley seen an improvement, they all have shinier healthier coats, not shedding as much, less "presents" for me to clean up in the yard. It's a grain free food, made with actual meat not by products. It's a bit more expensive, but so worth it. They probably eat healthier than I do lol.

My dog currently eats California Natural (the cats did too), but the parent company - makes of Innova as well - just sold out to Proctor & Gamble. I expect the quality to drop now that it's mass-produced by P&G. Therefore, we're switching.

I got the cats a small bag of Taste of the Wild and some PureVita samples. We'll see how that goes. They're all grain free, whole food based.

I don't know what to switch the dog to, though. He is epileptic and we have to avoid gluten, corn and carrots. No problem on the corn; our pet store doesn't carry any corn-based products. But carrots are harder to avoid especially in grain-free foods.

ETA: Just looked at the Taste of the Wild ingredient lists for dogs...several carrot-free varieties! think we'll get him that when his CA Natural is done. And it's $10 cheaper to bag to boot.

I feed my cat Purina Indoor formula hard and soft food. I've tried to be a good fur mom and make him homemade food made of actual chicken, beef, and fish, but he just won't eat it. I went through all kinds of canned and bagged foods and finaly settled on the Purina, because it was one of the few he would eat, and the only one he didn't puke back up.

We've been feeding our cockapoo Taste of the Wild since she was 8 weeks old. She does great on it and yes, there is less poop than would be produced by a grain based product. We are using the prarie formula, but I might try the roasted fowl to give her a change.
