Just read this in another forum post:

"Weight loss is 80-90% diet. Exercise is really more about physical fitness, not for losing weight."

And some other people think the same, is that true?

Yep its 100% true I would say its calories in vs calories out, if you eat within you calories, makes no difference if you work out or not and you should eat your calories back anyway. Helps build muscle and that speeds up fat burning, tones and makes you fit, but what you eat is the key.

I think exercise is an big essential in weight loss, besides just what your eating. You can eat healthy food all the time but, to keep from gaining you need to workout.

I dont know how exactly true that statement is, but I agree with it! You can't out-train a bad diet.
  • I can't imagine it's even remotely true. I haven't changed my diet much at all since I began running, but I've lost 17 pounds. I'm eating healthier, but not necessarily any less. But I've increased my exercise tremendously and it's showing on the scale.

Definitely true. But exercise has so many benefits that it's good to include it in your regime.

Its very true. And the reason pp has lost weight since you have started running but have changed what your eating is because you are burning more calories. Its simple calories in and calories out! I exercise to eat more!

My co-worker has lost about 40 pounds in the past few months and he hasn't exercised at all. He has just closely monitored his calories using MFP and is making better food choices and in appropriate portions. If he exercised it would even be more, I'm convinced diet is a bigger part of it.

eh it's a mixed can of nuts... Simply put is eat less or exercise more if you do both your gonna get even better results... I've lost 100 pounds on diet alone but I don't wanna be simply a skinny outta shape woman... I wanna be able to walk miles and lift as much as I do now without issue... Plus I wanna lose as fast as I can So I'm working my butt off :)
  • Yeah but I think you also have to keep your body on its toes. It adapts very easily, so exercise does become necessary once it adapts to the amount of calories you're eating.

It's true that "Weight loss is 80-90% diet."
On physical fitness, it actually helps you burn more unwanted fats [depending on the intensity though] than no exercise and just plain 'clean diet'.
In short, it is true and for me, it way better with resistance training. :-)

Exercise of course matters-- that's what the "calories out" part of the equation MEANS, doesn't it? Your BMR + how much you MOVE.

I think it's so much easier to work out hard than to eat less, I also think it's easier to eat right when I'm working out, and further, I find it much easier to stick with the 1700 ish cals I can eat in a day if I'm working hard, versus the 1300 ish I could eat in a day if I tried to sit on the couch all day. But, I get that that's how it works for me, and your mikage may vary.

Not to mention that I want to be healthy and energetic, not just skinny-- so diet is 80%, but 80% of WHAT? Of being skinny? Or of having a healthy life, and looking great? Because the latter is what I want.

It really depends. I think for me, this is very true. I workout to get fitter, not necessarily burn more calories. Some folks do 2 hours of cardio to burn 1500 calories off. Not my style. I usually burn between 300 and 800 calories per workout.
