So, I'm still on a mission to find somewhere local that stocks Almond Milk. Until then, I've been so curious that I made my own. I got a cup full of almonds with 4 cups of water, soaked them overnight and then blended them.

I didn't add anything else, just strained them through a cheesecloth and it produced about 250mL of milk (a lot of it flew out of my blender all over the kitchen, oops).

But I don't know how to work out how many calories would be in it? Everyone says 40 calories but when I go to submit it in my diary there are entries that say 60 calories in Almond milk. Is there any way to work it out for sure? In the meantime I'll just log it as 60 cal. incase, it's still less than skim milk.

It's so delicious by the way!

my unsweetened almond milk is only 40 cals for 1 cup
  • wiegh the almonds before soaking then after straining. You can then calculate how much is left in suspension in the water and work the calories from there

The store I buy from has both sweetened and UNsweetened so thats probably why you see 60 calories vs 40. Mine says 35 cal per cup of Unsweetended almond milk

Thanks everyone, looks like the difference is between sweetened and unsweetened.

Interesting, thanks! So do you mean that if I weigh 100g of almonds, then after straining there's 50g left (just an estimation) that means I should log the 50g of almonds divided by the portions?

We make almond milk too and I usually get about two cups of ground almonds. The idea of weighing after soaking and then weighing the leftovewr is good. I will try that next. I figure the homemade milk com3s in about 40 cals thats what we list.
