feeling frustrated

because on my 4.2 mile walk I am not sure if I am close enough on "guessing" calories burned. I don't have a heart monitor, yet, and so I just guesstimate. There are a couple of stretches of road that are uphill but I got tired of trying to figure out what the incline was(6% etc etc)so now I just put down 4.2 miles of 4 mph for the whole walk. I am not very regular on losing that pound a week and my food intake I believe is excellent. All the food groups, not too much in one setting, I eat like 5-8 times per day. No junk at all.

Without knowing for sure what Im burning though, how can I know if Im eating enough? I don't feel hungry rarely, unless I am working and skip a meal/snack. I haven't lost any inches either lately, like for 2 weeks or more?? Im eating 50-75% of my exercise calories and about once a week I go over but not by more than a couple 100 cals. Maybe this makes sense to someone else out there.

Any feedback is welcome:) denise in Sams Valley

Do you always do your whole walk at the same speed? Doing intervals of faster walking for 1min then slower for 2min. might give your body something different. prevention.com has some great tips and walking programs.
  • http://primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/ If you don't have an HRM, this site is more accurate on the cals burned, etc. than the MFP Exercise Database calculations. I have an HRM now so luckily I no longer have to guess. Hope this helps!
  • I think Keiko has a good point. Your body is getting used to the walking so you might need to increase the intensity a little. Try what Keiko said or try with light weights strapped to your legs. Good luck and keep pushing through!

if it's just walking maybe u could get a pedometer?.......most tell u how many calories u burn to and u can get one for about 20 bucks......much cheaper then a HRM but not as accurate...but more accurate then guessing for sure....

It's different each time, depending on my energy level but when I walk alone I will pick up speed and slow down(intervals). And as I mentioned, the hills will either slow me down a bit or sometimes I pump harder at the last hill I go up because I seem to get a second wind.

I will try to do more of that as I do believe it is good. I used to run and all but "break" into one when I walk alone. Some days though, I just am tired and do the walk but it is always at a 4 mph pace because edie and I finish it at that rate(4.2 miles in 70 min). Thanks so much for your help!! denise:)
