I tend to workout really late in the evening (10pm), after kids are in bed. I know it's important to eat something to refuel but I hate eating so late. Any suggestions on what to eat?

  • A protein bar might be a good idea. It won't have much carb / fat / sugar for overnight deposits, but enough protein to recover. I am guessing...experts might have a different view.

I usually have a yogurt or make a smoothie with frozen bananas, milk and either pb or chocolate syrup. I would just eat something small like a piece of fruit with string cheese.

To be honest I've found that most protein bars tend to be much higher on the fat/carb side than many other alternatives. That being said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with eating late at night. All that truly matters is your overall intake for that day. Meaning, so long as you're in a caloric deficit for that particular day you can eat anything at night that keeps you under that limit. A good example, I've been dieting around 6 months now (about to stop and begin my bulk though) as of the past few weeks I began making homemade peanut butter cups and eating them last meal of the day directly before bed its my snack to watch sports center with. I just make sure that even with eating these peanut butter cups I'm still under my daily caloric limit and as I wake up every morning and do my daily weigh in I've continually shed weight. Especially considering you workout late at night do not be afraid to eat.

It does not matter what time you eat.If you workout late, you need to replenish the glycogen stores in your muscles within a half hour. Rest is as important in burnng fat, as that is when the muscle tissue is repaired and strengthened and so is getting the proper amount of mutrition.....NOT reducing your caloric intake because of the time of day you eat.

Before suggesting what to eat, can you explain why you hate eating late at night? Is this digestion/sleep related?

One piece of bread with a little peanut butter .. and a glass of milk. Its not too heavy for late night, and the milk/carb combo will help with the sleeping ... also the protein is good for the obvious .. building muscle!
