Morning vs. Night

Hi guys,
I have been trying to push myself to go to the gym in the morning before breakfast and work but am finding it really hard to get out of bed in the morning. I go after work instead......
Is there really a great advantage to go in the morning. Maybe if I get a few solid answers about working out in the morning it might motivate me a bit more...any takers?

I like AM workouts because then I can actually do stuff (or relax!) after work. Plus, I think I get a better workout because I'm never dragging in the morning and it's nearly impossible to have something "more important" to do at 6 AM. Also, there are fewer people on the main floor of my gym in the early mornings and that's good for me, too.
Try it for 2 weeks and if you absolutely hate it, go back to PM workouts.

If you enjoy evening workouts more than AM workouts then you should absolutely pursue this route.0

I agree with sidesteal you need to learn your bodies rhythm and then use that as the basis for when you workout, true there can be advantages to training before eating in the morning but I personally do not follow that train of thought. I say do it when you can fit it in, so long as you do train in the gym to improve body composition then that is all that really matters.0

I used to only work out in the evening during the week because I really hated the morning. At some point over the summer, I realized that the only way I would get my running in is if I ran in the morning. What I have had to do to get out of bed is not negotiate with myself. I used to say 5 more minutes which ended up being 30 and then I never workout. Once my alarm goes off, I am up and out of bed. I have my clothes laid out and everything ready to go so I can be out the door in 20 minutes. It isn't easy, but I get my running in and I don't have to worry about if I will be able to get my workout in for the day.
That is me and if you feel the evenings are better for you, then stick with it. I personally believe that working out at any time of the day is great. There are so many studies that come out, it is hard to know what is right for each person. Do what you feel is right.0 -
It's a matter of preference. I have done both and this is what I have seen:
AM workout - at first, it is hard to get out of bed. I mean, think about it: go out at 5:30am in the snow or stay in bed under the warm, cozy blanket? pros: workouts at this time are the most efficient for the above reason since most people don't want to be at the gym at this hour and you will be able to keep the muscles warm throughout your strength training routines. cons: get up early.
PM workout - pros: working out in the evening means less time for any unplanned eating. you finish your day, head to the gym, work out hard, take a shower and head on home for a light dinner -- awesome!!! cons: lots of people at the gym.
In either case, as long as you do your workouts, be vigilent about your eating habits and enjoy what you are doing, you will be successful. Good luck to you and everyone on eDiets!!! Let's ring in the new year with rocking new bods!!!! :-)0 -
I can really relate to your comment about hitting the snooze button on my alarm...I always say just 5 more minutes......then before I know it I am at work.
I might lay my clothes out for tomorrow morning now....................................................................done. Im half way there hehehe:laugh:0 -
I've tried working out in the morning for years. It never happens. I have way to much to do before leaving for work at 6:30 am. Kids, dogs, husband all need to be taken care of before I can workout in the morning so I would end up having to get up at 3:30 just to get it in. Plus, I value the little bit of sleep I get. I think it's totally about your body and your needs. If you are likely to skip the workout in the evening and have time in the morning, go for it. I love my evening workouts! Plus, all the classes that I want to take at my gym are offered in the evening!0

Thanks for your advice...hmmm if it was snowing where I live I don't think I would ever leave my bed.
Its nice and sunny in Perth WA so I don't really have any excuses!0
