I Used to Be Fat TV show..
watching last night's episode. I know this makes for good TV and all, it just seems so unhealthy & unrealistic. When this chick is working out w/trainer, they agree on a pound a day loss for 100 days, and thus she has to have 3500 a day deficit! Jeez you'd have to work out like all day to have that!
I just hope young, impressionable people do not attempt this on their own, seems you could do lots of harm to yourself if you attempted such a fast, extreme loss..

i was watching that last night and thought the same thing. SO unhealthy and while she might be able to lose 1 pound a day for a couple of weeks, she would HAVE to plateau before 3 months. I hate MTV! It took me well over a year to lose 100 pounds and because of that ive been able to keep it off!0

I've never heard of this show. Of course this would be on tv though.....normal every day weight loss would never bring in ratings...super extreme weight loss would though. And sadly you are right.....people will think this is the way to do it, and some people could end up really hurting themselves.0

This is the first I've heard of that show. Sounds unrealistic! Heylush, that is awesome about your weight loss. I have lost 40 lbs and am hoping for another 40 lbs in the next 6 months.0

I can burn 3500 in under 4 hours. Just depends on what you're doing.0 -
When you work your muscle with strength training you will continue to burn the calories even when you are not moving. it is possible but not realistic. Did you catch the one that was on before it with the guy? He lost 117lbs in 100 days.0

A pound a day is crazy!!!! Only on MTV and only on TV. Think about the Biggest Loser. All of those contestants are monitored by doctors and trainers and each program is specifically tailored to each individual. They are very clear about that too. I hope that when people watch TV like this they realize that these people were not working, but completely focused on their weight loss.0

Anyone heard of the Biggest Loser - same concept. And it is unhealthy. Luckily they have professional trainers and medics on hand - but still it's not realistic or healthy for any normal person on their own. Good for them for getting healthy, I just hope they actually learn a healthy lifestyle with realistic expectations after the cameras and trainers are gone.0

This show is no different then the Biggest Loser. These people are monitored by doctors and their training and meal plan is based on the individual person. But it's an hour long show instead of months long so you don't get into so much detail.0

as unrealistic as it is, it makes me want to hang up a big sign with 100 days on it, and just see what I can do in 100 days. Pretty soon will be my 100th day in a row on mfp, and there are lots of stops and starts before that, but it made me really want to buckle down and DO something with my 100 days. I realize that I'm not going to lose 100 lbs, nor do I need to. I realize that I probably won't even reach my goal of 30 lbs in those 100 days, but hey, think of what you could do if you just tried hard, every day for 100 days!!
I find my motivation from the show in that, not in young kids losing insane ammounts of weight quickly.0 -

The thing is, even though they put the disclaimers on it, people are stupid enough to think "I can do this, too" and will eventually hurt themselves. The general population is not smart enough to realize that it's TV not real life.0 -

If I can burn aprox 1000 calories in 85 mins ( 1hr and 20 minutes) than I can do 3000 calories in 4hrs... this just means that I do not have time for anything else, like work, kids or house. These kids workout like 6-8 hours a day and dedicate their summer to just loosing weight!!
I think it's a great show and I think it is inspiring a lot of people. However most of us here have to work for 8 hours a day and kids to take care of, that's why we find it far fetched!0 -

do you watch The Biggest Loser? because the calorie deficit the contestants have is MUCH higher. from what I have seen of 'i used to be fat' it didn't seem like they were starving themselves. i'm not saying it's RIGHT, but a high calorie deficit is what results in higher, more drastic weight loss.
i myself will NOT be doing what these people are doing as i have neither the time or money to be doing the amount of exercise they do.
i found this website and it says that the biggest loser contestants have like a deficit of about 8000 cals a day.

EXACTLY!!!! these are like extreme circumstances. fitting in 60 mins of some kind of exercise is sometimes hard to do.0 -

if you watch the show 'where they are now' at the end of the season you will see that every contestant has gained some, if not a majority, of the weight back. is that inspiring?0 -
I've watched several episodes. They tend to lose between 30-60lbs. Nothing wrong with that! I've only seen one guy lose over that & he surpassed his goal.0

I think the point of this show is FANTASTIC. It changes these peoples lives. It teaches them the things they need to know. Its 100 days. You can learn a ton in the amount of time. I think most people would do better with weight loss and keeping it off if they had quick results. It is hard to stay motivated for long periods of time otherwise. Keep in mind too, as others have said, these people are monitored by doctors and have trainers that they work with. They spend all off their time focusing on this weight loss for 100 days and then they can workout for 30 to 60 minutes after the initial weight is off just to maintain. I disagree that it is always unhealthy.0

I know they're supervised by doctors, however I don't know if the average overweight viewer would get that. I agree that Biggest Loser is just as bad--maybe because it's 11 weeks long, it seems a little slower & less drastic that IUTBF on MTV. I still watch both, just think they're way too gimmick-y, and I wonder if these people have the tools to maintain their losses.
I'm lucky enough to not have to work at the moment & I still would never be able to burn 3500 a day without spending the majority of my time at the gym & honestly, who wants to spend all day there? Not me!0 -
That's why I like to watch these shows with a filter. I like to watch what changes the people losing weight are going through for my own motivation, but I gain no knowledge and I don't try to. Even Biggest Loser.0

I like I Used To Be Fat. I'm a person that don't care about scale weight. I focus on body fat percentage and pounds of fat loss. Scale weight loss and Fat loss aren't the same thing.
I wish this show would have the trainers tracking their clients body fat percentage as well, so these people can see how much pounds of fat they are losing, not just scale weight loss.
The difference between this show and The Biggest Loser is that The Biggest Loser have people competing against one another for money. This show doesn't. I don't watch The Biggest Loser. I use to. Do they show the nutrition side now or just the old format? The contestants exercising, competing, weigh in and voting someone off the show.
The teenagers in I Used To Be Fat and the contestants in The Biggest Loser main job is to workout. These people work out for 6 to 8 hours a day. Can a person lose 1 pound of scale weight in 6 to 8 hours? Yes, they can. A person can lose 1 pound of scale weight in an hour.
To my knowledge, The Biggest Loser contestant have colonics done too. They are trained to manipulate the scale. Their diet plan is low in calories too.
I can't wait until the next I Used To Be Fat episode comes on.0
