WHY are there carb arguments every single day?

If you don't agree with low carb diets don't do them. It's like gay marriage. If you don't agree with gay marriage, don't be gay and don't get married. Why do we care so much about what other people do?

Also, my sister, a PhD in medical research, posted this site the other day. It's a good one for finding scientific peer reviewed papers on nutrition and exercise:

Same reason there are sugar arguements everyday, protein arguements everyday, and saturated fat arguements every other day.

Because carbs are the devil. Fats are the devil. Proteins are the devil. Sodium is the devil. Consume water only, live long.

    Because arguing is fun?

Maybe it's because they aren't allowed to argue about anything else, like religion or politics?

and maybe it's just taken the spot of exercise calories?

    also, thanks for the link!

    Thanks for sharing the link.

As far as the arguments of MFP go, there are several different reasons people feel the need, and it will just continue on... such is life.

Just came across this today - not cutting out carbs but reducing and being careful about the type of carb I choose ( eg. wholemeal/ multi grain and brown rice etc) A trainer at the gym with a nutrition degree practically exploed when I said I was doing 40% carbs, 40 % protein and 20% fat (but usually less) - said I shoud be eating 65% carbs - I didn't eat that when I was FAT

It's a little mental. I tried to explain to someone that you'd have to cut out fruits and vegetables to stay super low carb. Eh! To each their own.

For the same reasons there are still wars, opposition, conflict, and disagreement.
Because we can and are allowed to have our own personal points of view, whether they be correct or hogwash.

I so wish I was smart enough to be a valid person to say that your trainer is wrong.....but I'm not, so I won't. *puts hand over mouth*

Actually, you can stay very low carb (under 20 grams) while still eating plenty of vegetables. It's actually the premise of the Atkins induction phase that most of the ~20 grams you're eating the first two weeks should be coming from vegetables, although not fruit. You definitely end up eating plenty! As carbs get increased after the second week, fruit is re-introduced. I still eat plenty of berries, for example, but I avoid bananas because they are so high in sugar.

You said "carb" in your title. Thou hast brought this on thineself.

Here, I'll go ahead and make this a full-on MFP argument

    HCG ROCKS, neener neener!
    Carbs suck!
    Protein rots your kidneys!
I gained 4 lbs of muscle THIS WEEK!
Anything but pure water is going to make you die of dehydration!
I eat 8 meals per day cuz otherwise your metabolism will disappear!

And people form opinions based upon lies and deceptions. Even well researched positions can be faulty. That is the challenge of living in a society where lies, faulty reasoning, and incorrect opinions can co-exist with truth.

Both a blessing, and a malediction.

::sigh:: It was also just an example of two different "fruits", one kind very low sugar, one kind very high. There are other foods you can eat which are high in potassium but not high in sugar. BTW, I happen to LOVE bananas, I just don't eat them very often.

My personal trainer broke it down for me like this:

If you are in a caloric deficit (around 1200-1450 calories per day NET), then your body will pull the energy it needs from fat in the absence of carbs, if your protein levels are good (1gram of protein consumed per pound of goal weight per day). If you up your carbs your body will pull the energy it needs from the carbs first, then fats.

He also stated that certain carbs turn to sugar faster than others when creating energy. These include white bread, white rice, etc... Then there are other carb choices like brown rice which do not turn to sugar as fast.

Bottom line though, people are going to argue for and against based on their own personal knowledge, experiences and preferences. It's like that with just about any thing you can take a side on.
