Menopause and Weight

I need some input. Is it a given after menopause to gain weight? The reason I ask:
I didn't seem to have as many problems losing weight prior to my hysterectomy in Dec 2007.
Yes my life has changed as well. I got remarried in June 2009, then quit smoking March 2010, but in my defense i have been exercising more and eating healthier, but the weight refuses to come off. It's not like I am grossly overweight, but definitely would like to lose 20lbs.
I want to exercise and eat moderately as a way of life. I am tired of constantly worrying about my weight. I some times wonder if that isn't part of my problem.
Is there no such thing as a happy medium?
