I see a trainer, and she wants me to do two strength workouts and two cardio workouts on my own per week, in addition to one strength workout with her.0

I think it is more about what you are comfortable with, and what your own personal limits are. You should always try to push yourself a little beyond what is comfortable, but not so much that you hurt yourself. When I started working out, it wasn't very much or very routine, but I started out doing just strength training classes through Turbo Fire. The cardio was too much for me, and I couldn't even get through a few minutes of it, let alone an entire class. But from my experience, every other day 20-40 minutes of strength training is good. 2 cardio workouts a week is great too, by the way!
Yoga I found is a great way to improve your strength and stamina too, as well as flexibility.0 -
Most trainers recommend 3 times a week for beginners with a rest day in between. If you want to bump that up later you can but you still want to make sure you're not strength training on the same muscle groups two days in a row. To allow your muscles to properly recover, you want to give them 48 hours between lifting sessions.0

My unprofessional recommendation.
In the beginning try to do more cardio than strength then gradually get to where it is about even. So it depends on how often you work out. For example, let’s say you work out 5 times per week, then 3 would be cardio 2 strength until you can make it even.
That said, for me crunches, lunges, push-ups and other body resistance exercises are simply total body cardio and in which case can be worked into all your workouts. True strength training would be with weights, i.e. curls, flys, etc.
And the end of the day, however, my advice is to always do what “feels” right to you. Try a few routines for couple weeks and settle with what you are most comfortable with. What won’t lead to too many aches and pains that will cause you to maybe take more “rest” days than are constructive.
Best of luck!0 -

Great recommendation! I was very much against yoga until I saw what a difference it made in my ability to do more.0 -
