WHY is 1200 cal the magic number?

I just stumbled upon an article about 1200 diets and why it became the magic number for weight loss. It goes into the fact that EVERYONE is different and it doesn't fit everyone and some other good info. Thought I'd post it so everyone can decide what is best for THEMSELVES!

I lost 8 lbs last week and my caloric intake is about 1500... Everyone is different. It depends on a lot of factors.... My dietitian says that you should not go below 1200 in a day... Good luck!0

My Mom has a little old lady metabolism, and she had to get down to 1200 calories to lose weight. She was eating like a cup of food at each meal, and i worried about her nutrient intake and food diversity. Under 1200 is hard to get enough nutrition. It can be done, but it's hard.
My Mom has a willpower of titanium.
Now she counts to 50 carbs, and the weight is coming off much easier. I should ask her what her calories are now.0 -

That's a good question. Currently MFP is stating my intake should be 1200, but I'm so scared to exceed that amount! I always eat a little lesser than 1200, or go a little bit over than 1200. And when I do that, MFP said my intake is too little
How much more do I need to eat. Lol! I am obese already!

I just wanted to mention I am not trying to promote under 1200 or over 1200.. I just want to post it so it could give everyone a little background, especially the newer people, so everyone can decide for themselves. Everyone thinks their way is right, however everyone's body is different as is their metabolism so I though this could help some people decide for themselves. :-)0

that was a good article. Basically seemed to be saying "eat more calories," but then all the comments at the bottom were like, "woohoo 1200 cals."
I personally aim for 1800 cals/day and have been losing on that.0 -
And just another piece of info to confuse us all further... I have a friend on my page who is down to around 155-160 and she finally got there after she UPPED her calorie intake by about 400 calories/day! :noway:0

I think it's OK to go below 1200 calories sometimes. I take my height into consideration. I'm short, 5'1 and don't believe I have to always have 1200 calories. I understand the logic though, nutritionists are concerned about vitamins and such. And, of course there is the forever feared starvation mode. I am not unhealthy and if I go below 1200 on some days I won't be malnourished nor in starvation mode. I take vitamins every day anyway. If I'm not hungry, I'm not eating. That's all there is to it. There are plenty of days when I go over so it all works out. I've been doing this diet since March. I'm losing at a decent rate and am very healthy. Good luck to every one.0
