I don't know whats up but I can't catch a good nights rest at all. I just lost my job and I would usually go to bed around 9pm and wake up at 5am. Its been a week or so and I still get super tired at that same time but I can not fall asleep and if I do its usually around 2 or 3 and then I still end up getting up around 5. No extra sugar intake or anything and no late night work outs. Any advice?

    I am sorry.

My likely the reason that you can't sleep is stress due to the job loss. When I got laid off I went through a huge bout.

    ((hugs)).

I hope it gets better for you because not sleeping stinks!

ADVICE! I have some! I am a girl who has suffered from insomnia for a long time!
(I am on medication, but this helps me too)
    I call it my B.B.B.
    Bath, Book, Bed
Take a nice warm bubble bath with a great smelling shower gel that will give you bubbles, soft skin and a great scent. Make sure it is a soothing smell, if you have a store called The Body Shop, I can suggest some good shower gel that makes for amazing bubble baths. But some good scents are: Almond, Olive, Coconut, Raspberry, Cranberry, Lavender, Vanilla. (You can even mix them!)
Reading a good book while in the tub, it will help you relax! If you don't have a tub, do it in bed!
Get some good sleep spray that you can spray on your pillows or a lotion that works for sleep that you can put on your hands and chest/neck, the smell will help you rest and help your dreams. These can be bought at The Body Shop or Bath and Body Works. There are always some great stuff out there.

Pamper yourself before you go to bed, it will help you, I assure you :D

Stress does it to me, too.

Best thing I can think of is not to fight the stress out of your brain. It's cognitive behavior therapy. You literally thank your brain for making you aware that you're having the stressful thought, fully process the thought then let it go. Even if you have it again later, repeat the process. I literally say, out loud, "Thanks, Brain! For letting me know I was having that thought!" then allow myself to feel the implications of that stressful idea and filter it through wherever I think it belongs.

If you try to suppress the stress, it will just create guilt when you find yourself having the thought, creating more stress!

I don't know if that approach will help you, but I hope so.

    Good luck!

I LOVE this idea! xD But I've encountered a problem D: I've been reading till my eyes bleed lately and still nothing. I have almost always been an insomniac but lately is pretty bad even for me :p
BTW I'm probably going to buy good smelling stuff anyways :D

Honestly, this works for me and has since day 1. If you have any kind of ipod, mp3 player and a set of earbuds, get an audiobook. Ipods are nice because you can set a timer so it turns off in however long you want it to. If you have a smart phone, they have apps that can set a sleep timer for your stuff too. Even if it runs all night, you won't hear it. Then fire it up, listen to ta chapter or two and just try to stay awake. I cannot, and previously, I was one who would toss and turn the entire night.

The most annoying part about that is you have to find your place the next time you put it on. But i have books now that I've already listened to and enjoyed and don't really care what place I'm at when I'm using them just for sleep.
  • P.S I don't have insomnia, I just work overnight. Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhh FML

Set yourself a limit. Like for me, depending on the book, I will not read more than 100 pages. I try to at least read 25 pages. Put your book mark at a chapter and don't allow yourself to read further than that :)
Maybe have yourself some milk? Sometimes I drink milk or some 100% cranberry juice before bed.

And if you need recommendations LET ME KNOW!

    Try Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged.

    Effing SNORE, dude.

If that book has a Chapter 2, the last decade has yet to reveal it to me. XD

Valerian. All natural herb, or melatonin. I have used valerian many nights. it's not addicting like Lunesta or Ambien, and no hung over feel in the morning. Try a boring book like something on politics, or religion. I like true crime so I can read all night. I HAVE to stop. sometimes I end a paragraph and close my eyes for a few. gets me every time. Sometimes I wake up tangled on my book and have lost where I left off. so I fold a corner.

Hey, that's exactly what I do too! I usually pick an audiobook that I've already read "in real life", so it doesn't matter if I lose the thread of the story. (Right now I'm listening to Lonesome Dove at night, for the umpteenth time!) It just relaxes me to hear someone reading out loud, I guess.

I also wake up very early these days. I retired about a year ago but I find I sleep less, not more. I often go to bed around midnight but still I wake up at 5 or 6. I just go ahead and get my morning walk done, although these days (like right now) I have to wait for daylight before I head out. I just drink my coffee and catch up on MFP. Good luck to you, both with the sleeping thing and the job situation!

Try this relaxation techique once you get into bed. Lay down, and then just imagine something wonderful happening in your life ...look at it as a chance to day dream at night. For instance I imagine I've gone to the casino and I win big on some slot game, I imagine what I would do with the winnings (pay off the mortage, go someplace exotic, etc...). Usually I find that it gets whatever is worrying me off of my mind long enough for me to relax and then I fall asleep. Hey, works for me.. hope it might for you.

Hope your sleeping like a lil baby soon :flowerforyou:

Stress will do it. Lack of sleep really sucks. They say, getting over sleep deprivation takes weeks of restful sleep. So nip this in the bud and take care of yourself!

Look into stress management techniques (e.g. mindless/relaxing hobby, going for a jog/run, etc.)

Do you have a plan? Having a plan helps with reducing stress. Big time. Most the stress, for me at least, is both loss of "control" and uncertainty. Making a plan and working the plan keeps me focused and gives a sense of control (or at least a "say") over my situation.

Also, AVOID the LCD screens before bedtime! Studies have shown that a flat panel monitor, the screen on a smart phone (iPhone, Blackberry, etc.) hinders our desire for sleep. Not sure why, think it has something to do with the undetectable flickering of light.

    Job Finding Hints
They used to say, "Its not what you know, but who you know." That's was changed to "Its not what you know, and it not who you know....but who knows you." However, even that is no longer the case..... its more like "It not what you know, or who you know...but who knows you and what you can do." Basically, the emphasis is networking, networking, networking.

When I was out of a job, I discovered that there were a few user groups in my area related to my field/career. It was great for me, because those users groups are free, I made new connections, and learned a lot. Also, it helped me in that I felt "active" while job hunting.

Another helpful hint was experience in speaking and management. I had joined Toastmasters in the past. Its very inexpensive and you learn to speak both publicly and on your toes. A great skill for interviews. Also, their leadership track helped me with developing management skills. Many have commented on how well I had interviewed, which was a great compliment. The best was when I got the job.
