How do you travel and keep a mostly vegetarian diet?

So my family wants to fly somewhere for a vacation to see some people that live in another state, and I'm kinda nervous, I'm still transitioning to a plant based lifestyle after watching Forks Over Knives, I still eat meat like 1x/week but if it was less often I wouldn't care, I don't want soy or more than 5% animal protien, I prefer the O.J. w/calcium rather than the ingredients in any calcium suppliments I've looked at and it isn't dairy so its alright by me. I also have a small amount of yogurt and can't seem to give up my coffee creamer, I'm just wondering how do you stick with it when you aren't at home where its easy to get your nuts, beans, salads, fruits, veggies, should I go shopping there? Or just pick out the stuff thats good for me and hope I get enough nutrients? Any tips or thoughts? I was trying to make this short, let me know if you have questions, hoping you get the basics of my diet, I prob forgot to tell you something but oh well.

I would speak to the people you are going to visit and let them know about your eating preferences. Let them know that you are happy to buy and prepare your own foods and ask if this is ok. I'm sure it will be, and they will probably make a special shopping trip to stock their home with foods to your liking (I know I would!). Have a fun vacation!

You may be better off shopping there. Be sure to take quality bars for emergencies, ie. Larabar. Stock up on things you like and that are filling so you can still eat the way you prefer to. Good luck! It can get tricky but you can do it with a little planning!

Making any major changes to your diet (cutting out meat, cutting calories, carbs, whatever..) can be a daunting task for reasons like this. I've been a vegetarian for 5 years, so I can relate. If you're staying with people, don't hesitate to let them know! It's no slight to them if you want to do some shopping so you can prepare food for yourself. Same thing if you find yourself eating out a lot. Ask questions. Many places are willing to serve up alternatives to suit your preferences.
