Long Time, No Gym

Hello all.

To cut a long story short, I haven't been to the gym in a very long time. I managed to pluck up the courage to go with an ex, but as soon as I arrived there the first thing I heard was "Wey-hey fatty-fatty bum-bum"

So I just turned around and sat in the car, waiting for her to finish her gym session.

This weekend I'm hoping to start the C25k at the local student gym and wondering if anyone can give me some advice, such as appropriate clothes, what not to do etc. I understand they ask for "sports gear" but I don't really own any. I understand the hygiene part though (even if I struggle with spelling it) But as I said, any advice would be appreciated.

Craig

What an awful thing to say to somebody - some people are so cruel.

As far as gym attire goes - just wear some mesh shorts/pants and a t-shirt with some tennis shoes - doesn't have to be anything fancy. Most gyms request that your shoes be the kind that don't make black streaks on the gym floor.

    Etiquette:
    1. Don't hog equipment - if you notice that all of the machines like the one you're using, for instance the treadmills, are taken and somebody is waiting, don't spend more than an hour on the machine to allow everyone to have their turn.

    2. When you get done, be sure and wipe off any part of the machine that you touched - buttons, handles, seats, etc...Most gyms provide paper towels and some spray for you to do this.

Those are just a few things I've picked up from spending time at the Y. Don't worry about what other people say and definitely try not to worry about what they may be thinking. The truth is, half the people there are just as insecure as you are, or else they wouldn't be there trying to improve themselves. As far as the douche that made that comment, his attitude is probably just compensating for a lack of other things.

Good for you for jumping back in to the game. Best of luck to you!!

First of all, I'm appalled that someone would say such things. Karma will definitely have a hand in their slow and painful death.

Secondly, as far as clothes go.. I've seen people in loose cotton shorts and a tshirt. When I hit the gym, I usually wear a cotton tshirt and some comfy yoga pants. If the gym does not offer hand towels, I usually bring my own as I get pretty sweaty. Also I make sure to bring a bottle of water and some music to listen to. Good luck! and mean people say mean things only to compensate for lack of self worth :)

People really can be *beeps*! I'm sorry that you had that experience, especially since you took the initiative to change your life. There are always options besides gyms anyway. Start with nice long walks outside or buying free weights for your home. Just think if you do either of those you won't have to pay any membership fees to a gym :) I agree what everyone else says about workout clothes. T-shirts and mesh shorts are cheap, easy to find and comfortable!
