Locking/Deleting Threads that differ from MFP's belief...

I read this on a locked thread in the exercise forum:

"The staff of MyFitnessPal is actively reviewing their stance on topics that recommend or promote dieting methods that run counter to our site's own weight-loss recommendations."

So...does that mean that they are going to delete threads such as those started by Stroutman who is VERY knowledgeable simply because it is his belief that you should choose calorie limits based on your BMR and TDEE and not worry about "eating back exercise calories" since his formulas have them factored in already?

Just curious, cause this statement posted by a new mod bothers me. Why can't we discuss things, whether or not we all 100% agree? Cause honestly, MFP's way is not the end all, be all of weight loss...

    We all like it here.
Unless everyone starts a revolution, I have been told that my account will get deleted for not adhering to forum rules.

That would suck - I would listen to him anyday over a generalised web generated calorie number.

I take that to mean that they're talking about diets that are dangerous and/or do not promote a healthy lifestyle. Like "magic" pills or starvation diets.

Because we agreed to their Terms Of Service prior to beginning the usage of MyFitnessPal.com, that requires are total compliance.

Im not about to jeopardize my ability to use this site when things are finally going well for me to break the rules..

I don't see how it's "breaking the rules" necessarily. I might not agree with fad diets of any kind...I don't actually...but if someone posts a topic about them in the future for discussion, how is it breaking any rules? I don't remember seeing in the terms of service that HcG is not acceptable, but Atkins is, just so long you are eating exercise calories back and not going under 1200.

I just think that people come to a website like this for information, and if informative threads are deleted, then who benefits from them? I understand that people post negatively on threads, but why take the whole thread down instead of the meanie posts? You know, like they already do?

It's not currently in the rules, as far as I know, but when they say they're reviewing their stance, I take that to mean they're going to change the rules and make us agree to the new ones. I think it's well within their right to take steps toward making sure people aren't following potentially dangerous diets, considering the goal of this website is health and fitness (not just weight loss). Something like Atkins is simply a diet choice and can be used in conjunction with the calorie goals given by MFP. Other methods, not so much.

If you find a site you like better, than go there, but most sites have the same rules. This is a free site with amazing tools to use. You also had to read the rules before signing up. This is Mike's site, so he can make the rules.

If you find someone you think has all the answers, than add them as a friend and pm each other all you want. :flowerforyou:

Its pretty hard to "speculate" at all now.

Nothing official has been stated, other then "things are being reviewed". To me that means - they are looking at the situation, and trying to find the best way to implement some changes. And no decisions have been finalized, or implemented.

At this time we have NO idea what those changes will entail, or how it will effect other posters, posts, comments, threads.

So its really sort of baseless to get to concerning right now, since we have no real information to base the concern on.

Once more detailed, and official information is available about what things will and will not change, that would be the point, - to me- to bring up objections if one has them.

Until that point , its not worth getting stressed over something, that may be a "non issue.

    Just my opinion. :)
  • While it does seem to be excessively "big brother is watching you"-ish (it's Sunday, I'm sleep deprived, and adding "ish" makes it a word! ), like others said, it goes with the territory of joining a free site and agreeing to the terms and conditions. It's sad that the mods. feel the need to police the forums that intensely, but I'm sure they have their reasons. :ohwell:

I have heard rumblings about these "groups" that will be appearing. After reading through the incredibly long list of things that are NOT allowed to be discussed, I am hoping that this will change with groups. That there can be one for each area that is currently forbidden (a group to discuss politics, religion, sex/adult themes, etc...) and that maybe this will cut down on the number of threads that get locked and deleted.

Either way, I will continue posting in the forums as long as I find them enjoyable and/or informative. If the become overly moderated to the point that I no longer learn from them or find them fun, I'll stop posting, or go somewhere else if I begin to feel strongly about it.

it's kind of getting like that everywhere. like "freedom of speech....as long as you say what we want to hear." dont get me wrong, mfp is neat. But between the incorrect nutritional info that i keep finding and having to change and the "so and so is being mean to me because i dont like low carb and she does" BS on here, it's getting old fast. I think deleting another chunk of threads will make several people leave.

    To the OP:

It might have helped if you had stated that you had seen that comment in a thread about a very hot topic on here that causes endless arguements; namely HCG.

I have seen that comment being posted by Moderators several times and each time it was in threads about HCG.
