New Watch

I had a Gamin Forerunner 50 which did nothing but monitor your heart rate and you had a thing you put on your shoe to measure the distance. Obviously things have advanced. I would like to purchase a GPS one, however I am wondering how sensative/accurate it was. If I wore it to work would it be able to see I walked 45 steps down the hall, and back to my desk? If this is possible what watch would you recomend. If I stayed with a Gamin would my heart rate strap work with the new watch?
