Protein shake advice

Hi guys,
I am just wondering if any of you have any advice on protein shakes and their effectiveness on weight loss. I was in our local health shop with my other half (who was in there to buy protein shakes-he is into weights and running and trying to build muscle) and I noticed a product called Sculptress by Maxitone. There was a plan to follow but not in depth-just a guide really.
I do Jazzercise (aerobic type work out) two-three times a week and I’m starting to do some daily bits-a few crunches and some arm and leg exercises for toning (nothing close to hardcore).
Can this really help weightloss or should I save myself £25 per week?
Thanks in advance for your advice-Gem

You are dedicated to get answer by creating two threads =P
Protein shakes don't really aid in weightloss but preserve muscle mass as to prevent catabolism. I use protein shakes for the convenience as I hate preparing meals but I have to admit is a lot more satiating to eat your calories than drinking them. If your protein is on the low side then it would not hurt adding them but don't expect it to help you lose additional weight, you'll be preserving the muscle you've been building with all the strength training you have been doing.0 -
I was wondering about protein shakes as well.... Thanks Peanut Butter junkie for a bit of insight.0

Three times per week, I enjoy Designer Whey 100 Cal protein shake mix. Those three mornings are when Im going into to work a morning shift.
Im having one right now made with fresh pumpkin-puree, cinnamon, nutmeg, Silk Light Vanilla soy milk, some ice and its a big super-thick smoothie... Usually Ill also pair it with some sort of small healthy breakfast-style sandwich of egg whites, fresh vegetables, a smearing of boursin on a small Joseph's Oat-Flax Pita pocket.
I would NEVER solely depend on any protein beverage to be honest because like another poster mentioned - its good to properly eat as opposed to drink your calories.
Im using this particular product under the blessing of an Endo. I simply brought it in, explained that my early morning shifts make it hard to actually EAT something, but to drink something that has pure items in it actually satisfies me... once she read the label, she was extremely pleased that I made a good choice for my unique situation....
PSSSSSST - I make ice cream with this, just a regular smoothie, with a little bit of frozen wildberries, the soy milk, the ice - blend, and put in the freezer... OMG.. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good!0 -
I drink whey protein every day. Drinking whey protein in the morning can keep you from getting cravings later on in the day, keep you satiated longer, and it repairs muscle if you've been working out! No one ever usually gets enough protein in their diet (especially women). For me, it helps my fat loss greatly. There have been a ton of studies done that show when you add more protein to your diet you will have a much higher percent fat loss than diet and exercise alone. It also helps me from getting really sore after a hard workout. I take Gold Standard 100% Whey in Double Rich Chocolate. Helps satisfy chocolate cravings too!0

I use PHD Diet Whey - I usually mix it with porridge or greek yoghurt though, as I'd prefer to eat my calories than drink then - Just a personal preference. To be perfectly honest the main reason I have them is because I really like the taste! It's like a dessert but guilt-free! I bought them because I'm veggie, and sometimes struggle to get enough protein in my diet. They are really filling, and I find they are particuarly yummy after a vigourous exercise class, or a great breakfast. But if you're already getting plenty of protein from meat or fish it's probably not necessary.
Good luck x0 -
Vi-Shakes are good and can mix into anything. I have the comparable information against other popular shakes if you want.
You can see the products here: http://cathymoses.myvi.net/products.html0
